5wks post c-sect - AF or PP bleeding?

I'm sorry if this has been asked a thousand times....

I'm about 5-1/2 weeks pp and for the last couple of weeks have maybe had some color discharge/spotting but nothing significant, if any at all.   Yesterday, I started having more discharge/spotting and today is light (but increasing) bright red bleeding. I'm having some light af like cramping, so I am not sure if it is af.   I'm breastfeeding and pumping.  DS finally got strong enough to transfer enough milk to EBF the last few days but I am still pumping on top of that, so if it is af...that really sucks!  lol

Has anyone had the same experience?

When would you call the doctor?   I don't want to bug them if it is just pp bleeding or af.

  • It could be AF, even though you are pumping/EBF or it could still be pp bleeding. Both are normal at this point.

  • I had AF at that point despite the pumping, which I was told was because I was back on the pill.

PP or AF is completely normal. My OB said PP can fade out then come back before it fades completely. I'd say watch yourself and if you start getting anything that just isn't right, make a call to the OB; although you'll probably have your PP follow up soon, too. They can tell which it is for you when you're there.

Thanks.  I think it is PP because it doesn't seem quite like AF.   I'm just going to watch it and if it gets to be a lot or clots or anything I'll call my OB.

Unfortunately, my incision got infected so I'm seeing a wound care doctor until it is completely healed.  So I won't have my PP follow-up until the incision is completely closed instead of at 6 wks.

  • I never stopped bleeding before my 6 week pp visit but right before my appt it got brighter red and heavier again.  I told the nurses I thought it was my period and they acted like it was no surprise at all and said I was just one of the lucky ones who was getting back to normal sooner.  I have nursed and pumped since day one and have had a period every month.  It really sounds like what's going on with you.

  • It could be either one. Both would be totally normal at this point.
