Anyone take prenatal classes through AMMA?

Which classes did you take and did you feel they were beneficial?

I am going to Generations and the nurse is really pushing the classes, especially breastfeeding and child birth.  I've heard people have hit or miss experiences with classes so I want to make sure it is worth the time and money before going.

  • I personally haven't done a lot of reading about the actual child birth part so that class for me and my husband was beneficial. I felt it was worth while anyways. I liked how on the last night they had you lay out an ideal birth plan and then change it a few things at a time, really put it into perspective that more than likely things won't go the exact way you have them planned in your mind. The breastfeeding class was ok, a lot of it I knew from the reading I had done, but there were things I still got out of it that were helpful. We took that class with the baby care one and I thought the baby care part was a waste personally.

  • We did the one day All In One class. I've been doing a lot of reading, but hubby still felt a little uncomfortable with things and learns better in a class type environment. it was very comforting, a friendly and warm environment. They were very open to staying late to talk, answer questions, give suggestions, etc. I would suggest it.

  • We signed up for the one day preparing for childbirth and 4 hour (?) breastfeeding and baby care basics class. Our breastfeeding and baby care class ended up being the Saturday DS was in the NICU since he came early so we got a refund for that portion. As for the preparing for childbirth class, most of the information they talked about I already knew from all of my own research and asking my midwives. I found it to be most beneficial for DH, but I still enjoyed the class and it was nice to hear the questions/concerns from other parents. Amma was also recommended by my midwives and it 'fit' with the birth plan I had in mind. I don't necessarily think I 'needed' to take the class, but it was worth it to me just to have DH learn some things.

  • My husband and I ended up doing the prepping for childbirth class (one day) after much deliberating about taking a class or not.  I am SO glad that we did.  It really helped relieve a lot of anxieties for me and my husband.  The instructor we had is nurse at the hospital we are birthing at and for me it was nice to be informed about certain options.  It was very informative and I have read a lot online about birth and everything--talked with girlfriends--but for some reason hearing the information directly from a professional (who isn't a DR) and a mother really eased my mind.  I HIGHLY recommend taking this class especially if you're having some anxiety over labor and delivery.

  • I took the Preparing for Birth, Breastfeeding, and Caring for Your Newborn classes. I thought the birth class was the worst. I felt like I already knew a lot of the information, and we spent a lot of time practicing breathing techniques. But it may vary by instructor.
