Bedsharing ? - Anyone's LO's roll onto tummy at night?

One more bedsharing question for you...

My son (3 mos) is starting to show signs of wanting to roll over.  I'm afraid that he may roll from his back onto his tummy and may end up face first on our mattress.  We bought a brand new queen size firm mattress specifically so we could bedshare... but I know even a firm adult mattress is softer and more cushiony than a crib mattress.  I tried putting my face directly down into mattress last night and my face sunk in (so i couldn't breathe)... then tried it on the crib mattress, and my face didn't sink in as much.  DH doesn't think it's an issue.

As a first time mom, I'm just not sure if he'll know to move his head to the side if he rolls onto his tummy.  Anyone experience this or have any thoughts?

  • We don't bedshare, for reasons like what you've described.  To me, there is no comparing how you would breathe and how your LO would.  Respiration rates are different.  If you're not sure if he'll know to move his head, how can you rationalize taking that chance?

  • We have always bedshared, and LO sometimes will stay on his back, and sometimes rolls over, and our mattress is not firm. He has always turned his head to the side. We haven't had any problems.
  • DS either stayed on his side facing my boob or rolled back onto his back. He didn't really have room to  keep going and end up on his stomach, so in many months it has never happened.

Where does your LO sleep on your bed? (ex: in between you and significant other? on the side of the bed?)  I'm thinking this might be good to not give DS room to roll over.

Either between me and a wall or me and a bed rail.

  • It's never happened.  She either stays on her side towards me or is on her back.  Plus there's not room for her to roll on her stomach without running into one of us.
  • My LO did start rolling onto his stomach around that age or a little older (up until then he either slept with me on the couch--a big "no-no", I know...or right up next to me on his side.)  I want to say around 4 months he would finish nursing and roll away from me onto his stomach.  This is also around the time he started sleeping for longer stretches of time, and without needing me in the bed in order for him to sleep.  I was worried about it at the time, but both my mom and MIL said all of their babies slept in bed with them, on their stomach, from day 1, and that made me feel better about the situation.  Also, I purchased a SNUZA alarm that hooks onto babies pants or diaper and goes off after 20 seconds of no breathing movement from LO.  I think having the SNUZA helped me get better sleep because I felt more comfortable with him sleeping on his stomach, and he was sleeping better because I was letting him stay on his stomach.

Thanks!! I didn't know this existed!

We have the purple one--Snuza Halo.  It really made me more comfortable and allowed me to get better sleep.  The directions say to put on the front of the diaper, but because he slept on his stomach I would clip it to the back of his diaper, and button a onesie over his diaper.  Sometimes it would fall off in the middle of the night if I just put it on his diaper and put footed pajamas on him without the onesie to hold the Snuza in place.  We used it religiously from 3 months until about 8 months.  We stopped using it a few weeks ago, due to the alarm going off in the middle of the night because it had fallen off of his diaper (he moves around a lot at night).  He is now walking, and just seems more "grown up" to me so I am now (finally) comfortable with him sleeping on his stomach, without the Snuza.  I highly recommend it, and hope it helps you as much as it helped me!
