Am I about to be rude?

I think I'm on edge more so today than anything because it's my moms birthday and Jack was sick all weekend.

We have a new teammate who is super nice. Great guy. He's better than 100% of the people we've hired recently.

The only thing wrong with him is that he chews his gum with his mouth open and smacks it. OMg I can't stand mouth sounds and it's my biggest pet peeve! I have a headache today and I really don't want to sit here and listen to music all day since my ear buds make it worse. Would I be rude if I asked him to stop chewing with his mouth open?

We're in a lab so think open room with a bunch of computers not cubes.

    Kinda, but he is also being rude by chewing with his mouth open. Is there a way you can make a joke about it to call his attention to it?

    I would either ask him very politely and in a private way where no one else can hear, so as not to embarrass him, or just make a joke about it and hopefully he'll get the hint.

    Can you play it off as being more about you than about him? Like, "My head is killing me today and every tiny sound in this office is totally amplified, even you chewing gum..." and then hope he gets the hint?
