BLW question from a lurker

I like to read the goings on on this board since it gives me great tips/advice :)

Here is my question - DD is almost 6 months old.  She used to sleep around 8 hours at night with the occasional night waking to eat.  (She's EBF).  The last couple weeks, she's been waking at least once a night to eat.  (She gets her last feeding around 9:30P and I consider "night" to be through 6/7A).

I just started her on solids very slowly.  I give her a little rice cereal usually every day and I gave her some mushed up banana chunks this weekend.  The thing is, I try not to "feed" her - I just hold the spoon up to her and she usually grabs it and puts it in her mouth (with most of it falling but that's ok).  I'm just getting her used to the texture and idea of solids.

Long question is - I feel she may need more "substance" since she seems to be waking regularly to eat (and I always feed her - I won't withhold a feeding esp. b/c she's a peanut), but I want to do BLW and not force her into purees.  Should I just continue to let her play with foods or should I try to get her to eat a mini meal?  Pedi told me at her 4 month that she should not be cutting down on BM if I started her on solids.

The other thing is, she's not sitting unassisted (she can sit in a highchair) and she's still got the tongue thrust reflex, so I haven't truly been BLW-ing yet.

TIA!

Re: BLW question from a lurker

  • My DD is 14mos old and still nurses at least once a night regardless of how much solids she gets during the day.  We did BLW but really didn't get consistent with it til she was 7-8mos old.  At this point I wouldn't assume that she's not getting enough just because she's waking at night.  There are so many reasons that LOs can wake to nurse at night.

Once DD got older I tried to up the solids to see if it would cut down on the night nursing (like around 12mos) but it doesn't.  She just really likes to nurse.  I think it's more of a comfort thing to my DD.

I'd stick with letting her keep EBFing. Honestly, if she's not sitting yet and you want to do BLW, I may not even bother with the cereal/purees. She'll be just as happy with a plain spoon as she will with the food.

I agree. If you want to do BLW, the time is not yet in terms of age or development. If you are concerned about her weight, focusing on breastmilk is probably still you best bet at her young age. I also agree with the other poster's point about night-waking not being just about hunger. Night waking is developmentally normal (and only 1 waking is AMAZING) and is for food, thirst, comfort, teething relief, socialization, attachment, amusement, needing soothing after waking because of urinating, etc.
