Does anyone have an e-reader that they love? I am torn between the Nook & the Kindle and then which version of one to get. I love to read - I read a lot.
My hang-ups with an e-reader:
1. I can't trade books with my mom and friends if I have an e-reader
2. I can't buy 25 cent paperbacks at yard sales for the e-reader
3. I wonder how well I will like it on an airplane with restrictions on when you can turn on electronic devices. I used to travel a lot for work - it has slowed down but can pick up at anytime.
The reasons I think I want an e-reader
1. When I travel I don't have to drag 4-6 books (I read really fast so it takes a lot of books)
2. If I get one where I can get magazine/newspaper subscriptions delivered to it to cut down on the paper piles in my house
Re: E-Readers
I have a kindle. I have just the basic wireless friendly model since I got it before all of the cool stuff came out. However, I think I would still get the same one. I have a smart phone, so I don't need my e-reader to do cool things for me.
1. You can trade books with others who have a kindle. Or if you get a Nook, you can trade with others who have a Nook.
2. I got a Kindle because I do a lot of Amazon shopping and was more familiar with their programs. So, B&N might have stuff like this too, but I am not sure. Amazon has a "daily deal" on an e-book that has been greatly reduced. Most of them are 99 cents. They also have monthly specials for books that are $3.99 or less. I have found a ton of great deals this way. Plus, there are tons of free books available. (Mostly classics)
3. No help here. I have not flown with it yet.
All of this being said, I still buy "real" books. We have a huge library book sale here twice a year that I can get a bag of books for $5. And, there are some collections I have started that I feel like I need to finish. I switch back and forth between reading "real" books and e-books. I do find my kindle really convenient at times though.
I have a Nook Color, which I've had since last March. Given the choice between Nook & Kindle at this point I'd definitely go with Kindle. B&N has made rumblings about spinning off Nook, which would pretty much spell its demise, and as it is Amazon seems like a much more 'sturdy' company overall. Though, I say that and my H loves his HP Touchpad, so. lol. To be honest though, I use mine to post on The Nest more than I use it to read, heh.
I've flown with it, and pretty much juggled the kid and read SkyMall during the blackout periods. You usually get to turn it on after like 10 minutes in the air, so it's really only problematic if you're stuck on the tarmac for a long time and then, the flight staff are usually accommodating about it. Though, when I've had massive delays in the past, they've been on return trips, so I was re-reading one of the 3 paperbacks I blew through already during the trip. When H & I took our trip to Europe in 09, we'd both read all the books we brought while we were in Italy, and had a week in Paris to go... and had a 4 hour delay because they couldn't close the cargo doors. By contrast, when we went to Vancouver earlier this year, I had the first 5 books in the Sookie Stackhouse series, 2 magazines, and a few apps to play. When I blew through the Sookies I used the hotel wifi to download the next 3.
Having one doesn't preclude you from buying cheap books, though I will say I've been 'reading' Kitchen Confidential for like 3 months. I really like Bourdain as a writer, and the subject matter is super interesting to me... I just haven't read it because it's not on my Nook. Like Bethy said, you can trade specific books between friends. Nook has a lending system between 'friends', Kindle has a lending library, and you can download out of copyright titles from gutenberg.org on both. Nook has weekly 'free fridays' but they're usually kind of sh*tty books. They also have deals in the B&N cafe (like 'if you buy a venti frappuccino you can get a cookie free') but you have to leave the house for that.
This is pretty much all me too. DH got me a Kindle Fire for Christmas. I love it. I found a web site that compared it to the Nook and Ipad and it came out on top.
It doesn't have as much hard drive memory but it has "the cloud" which is basically free internet storage where you can keep books, movies, etc and access them from any computer anytime. So if you download a movie to you Kindle you can keep it in "the cloud" and access it from your work computer or home whichever.
You also can get membership to Amazon Prime that gives great deals on books, magazines and movies and allows you to share for free with other members.
I can't find the source I checked out but here is another link: https://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20009738-1/kindle-vs-nook-vs-ipad-which-e-book-reader-should-you-buy/
that compares all the reading tablets and ask what you want in it and tells you what you'll get.
We have a Kindle, just the regular old Kindle, not a touch or Fire or anything. I love it. All I wanted to do on it was read, not bump or play on the internet or whatever, so the simplest works for us. It was inexpensive enough (under $100) that I don't feel bad buying/reading real books occasionally.
We also have a Samsung Galaxy tab, with a Kindle app. It's pretty cool too. It does way more than our plain Kindle.
