Newborn sleeping position question

DS2 likes to sleep on his side. When I put him down on his back he rarely goes to sleep. He has rolled onto his side now a few times and twice now I have woken up and found him on his stomach sleeping with his head to the side. Wwyd? Try to position him on his side for sleep with rolled up blankets on either side?

Re: Newborn sleeping position question

  • Personally and after a ton of research, I think it's safer for babies to sleep on their stomachs without anything in the crib than on their side with blankets surrounding them.

My babies NEVER slept on their backs and for my own sanity, I put them on their stomach. From all my research, if your baby is at low risk for sids(born full term, no smoking in house, nothing in the crib, etc...) then tummy sleeping doesn't increase their risks. Of course, the decision is yours but I don't think blankets rolled up are a good idea, IMO.

  • Just wanted to chime in (and hope I don't get flamed) and say that DS slept on his stomach from the get go and that's what I plan to do with all my kids. Nothing else was in the crib with him. Occasionally, he slept on his back, like if that's how we got him to sleep and it was easiest to lay him down that way, but I'd say 90% of the time, he was on his stomach.

  • B slept on her stomach, and still does since she was 2 weeks old! If that's what he likes go with it!

  • Glad to read these posts. It's hard for me to be ok with putting him on his stomach but I also can't just hold him while he sleeps. I tend to fall asleep (and need to sleep too) and I'm worried I willd drop him. He is getting really good with head control so that makes me feel better about finding him on his stomach.
