I need to fly from Austin to either Detroit or Chicago mid-March. Right now I'm seeing prices of about $380. That seems high but it's been awhile since I flew. Should I buy at this price or wait and see if it comes down do you think?
I think that sounds pretty good. We usually flew Austin - Minneapolis and fares were typically in the $300 range. I'd probably book sooner than later before they jack up the fares when people start considering spring break trips.

I need to rent a car too! This is all for a friend's baby shower. DH will not be thrilled.
That's not terrible - that's what we paid to fly to Detroit over
Christmas, but we snagged a great deal, they'd been running around $100 more than that. Have you checked farecast.com?

I fly to Chicago quite a bit and that's a pretty good price. One way to maybe have it a little cheaper is fly on a random day like Tuesday and always take the super early or super late flight because those are cheaper.
Thanks guys! I'm going to go ahead and book. I can't fly on a random day because DH doesn't want to take more than just the Friday and Monday off and he'll have to watch the boys. Also this is going to be into MDW. I wish it were DTW, I'm just more familiar with the area.
This had better be the most awesome baby shower I've ever attended
I was looking up flights last night and I started looking into flying out of different cities(Houston, DFW, SA) there was such a wide range of prices out of each airport. Even driving to San Antonio I could save 100-200 on some flights. If you don't mind driving you should look into that.
i found flights/hotels in chicago really depended on the season. i flew there a lot for work the last few years, and winter was always ridiculously cheap (go figure no one wants to go there when it's frigid!). flights for $250-300, 4 star hotels for $120.
$380 isn't bad for spring, but i don't think the prices will get much better if you wait it out. kirknsarah flies to chicago a lot too, so she might have additional insights into $.
Have you checked southwest? They fly to both, although getting to DET is a PITA.
Southwest is where I'm finding the cheapest flights, but to MDW not DTW. It's nonstop though, so that's nice.
Oops, meant DTW:) delta is the only one who flies direct to DTW from AUS and they are usually $$$:/ have you signed up through kayak? At least you'll get emails with prices.

i just got an email from our head gate agent at the austin airport (i'm a flight attendant) reminding us that march is the busiest month at the austin airport (aside from thanksg/xmas). sxsw/rodeo/springbreak. prices are sure to go up. mid march is in the middle for all those events. sorry. killeen is an alternate airport to look up too.

No I hadn't, thanks for the link!
Those are going to go up. March is spring-break month, I bet tickets will go over $400.
Summertime is cheaper. Our tickets to Detroit cost $325 last July - Tues to Tues flights and then DH flew Thurs to Sun for $350.
*sigh*

I think $380 to chicago sounds uber-expensive. We don't even pay that much to get to Indianapolis (which involves a connection) during Christmas.
to detroit, that might be more reasonable, but there are tons of flights to chicago every day, so I would expect them to be $300 or less.
