Hospitals

So I'm realizing I'm going to be passing up four closer hospitals to get to the one I will be delivering at.  With DS, I went to one about five miles from my house.  My OB moved away so I can't go to her anymore.  I haven't heard good things about the other doctors that deliver there.  Two of the other closer by hospitals are part of a system we've had bad experiences with.  One of them doesn't have a women's center, which I don't care but DH thinks it's important.  So I'm left with driving over an hour and passing four hospitals to get to this one.  That just seems so silly to me.  Anyone else doing something similar?

Re: Hospitals

  • I'll be delivering in a different state!  It's about an hour away.  We have 1 midwife in my city and she's with an OB and you only get her when she's on.  We also only have 1 hospital here that delivers and I have not heard anything good about them.  It's kind of dumb to go that far away but to get the birth I want and our baby deserves it requires going that far away.

  • I'm not going over an hr away- more like 30min- and am passing up a pretty good hospital to have my OB deliver this one. This is the same hospital I delivered DD at and I love it so not going to a closer hospital is work it for me.

  • So true about the good birth and care that the baby needs/deserves.  I know some people have to drive over an hour with no other choices, so I know that's really not too bad.

I haven't decided which hospital of 2 I'm going to deliver at yet, but I'll pass by about 10 hospitals on my way to either one. My OB is about 30 minutes from my house, and one hospital is 30 minutes, one is 45. Of the two hospitals she/the practice delivers at.

For anyone who knows the area/size of the metro, I'll be driving THROUGH Minneapolis AND St. Paul on my way to the hospital :)

Yuck!  FX you go into labor during a light traffic time.

ETA: Good luck at your appt today!

  • At least you have the peace of mind knowing there are closer hospitals in a dire emergency. Go where you feel you have the best chance of great care! I am passing two hospitals to get to mine, but I work right across the street and my ob office is in the hospital complex. I will say this though, I thought my water broke w/ DS but they sent me home, so a two hour drive there and back would have sucked that day. And sometimes if you go and you aren't 4cm, they won't keep you. So you will probably want a plan for laboring away from home near the hospital. You will have to find a balance of not waiting too late and having a baby in your car and not going too early and getting sent home. But it's worth it for good care.
  • my OB is at a hospital about 20 min away and we have 2 or 3 that we will pass. but i trust my OB (she was fantastic on my first delivery) and there is no way i'd go to anyone else.

  • We'll be doing the same thing. The other hospitals that are near me just aren't that great and I wouldn't trust delivering a baby there let alone going there for much else. Just make sure you're all packed up and ready to go so that when it's time you can hop in the car without thought and get there as quick as possible! You have to go where you think is best... not where is the most convenient.

  • Most people where I live do have their babies far from home.  The closest hospital with even the ability to deliver is 30 miles away.  The next as far as I know is about 100 miles.  Most people go for the latter because the nearest one is not at all good, and I am beginning to realize that.  The doctors aren't good and you can never get them on the phone even for an emergency and when you call L&D at the hospital you will get different answers every time you call.  The hospital also just laid off a bunch of people, so it is just a matter of time that it closes down for good.  Definitely go where the best care is!
  • There are 4 great hospitals near me, and I recs for wonderful doctors at each.  I will be delivering in the Med Center, about 20 minutes away.  I actually chose my doctor based on where her privileges were, and I took recs into account too.

The Dr. that I see for my RSD also has privileges at the same hospital.  I'm a complicated case and I have an implant in my spinal column, so my OB and specialist will be working together throughout my pregnancy and delivery.  It took me seeing 3 different OBs to find one that was in agreement with how my delivery should be handled.

  • I delivered DS at a hospital about 30 minutes away and passed about 3 hospitals, one of which is like 5 miles from my house. I wanted a natural birth friendly hospital so it was worth the extra drive for me. It was at least reassuring to know that if we had an emergency there were a couple of great NICUs and women's centers closer if we needed them.
  • I'll be going about 40 minutes away.  And passing 4 other hospitals as well.  Kind of a bummer b/c one of the hospitals that my doctor delivers at is literally 5 minutes from my home.  However, I have to be at a hospital with a prenatal ICU and a higher level NICU.  (Just in case.)  Hopefully there will be no need for either of these this time!!!!  I'm keeping my fingers crossed and saying prayers everyday!

  • I'm driving about 40 minutes away (mostly because of traffic, and not distance) and passing 2 hospitals that are 10 minutes away.

I can't stand one of the local hopsitals, and I'll only end up delivering at the other if I go before 32 weeks, otherwise I'll go to the one further away.  I don't mind it at all.  My doctor delivers there (unless she needs the higher level NICU) and I had a great deliver last time.

My Mom drove 2 hours and out of state while in labor to have me!  I guess you do what you need to do/what you're comfortable with.
