Books before bed-is the kid in bed or out of it?

recently, we had friends watch the boys while we went to a Spurs game. They told us that the boys didn't like being in bed while they read the bedtime story and that they hoped it was ok if the boys were on the floor instead. My MIL and SIL also apparently put the boys in bed and then read the story.
We always read books on the floor while we change them into jammies and then they get into bed. Am I the only one who thinks it's weird to read to a kid who is in his bed? I mean, how do they see the pictures?

  • Layna and I read stories in her bed.  We lay next to each other, propped up by pillows.  The kid sleeps with three of them so we can sit up easily.

And its a twin bed :)

  • Ok, but my kids have convertible cribs, we don't fit in their beds with them. So if your kid is not in a normal bed, then how do you do it?
  • Cam's in a full size bed, so we read side by side in bed. If I was not able to lay down with her to read in bed, we'd probably sit in her chair to read.

lol - oh, right.  Back then we would lay down on the floor, on our stomachs with the books in front of us.

I think there were a few times that she would be in bed.  I would sit on the side, leaning back and holding the book up for her to see.  But that wasn't comfortable for me so usually we were on the floor.

  • We sit in the glider.
  • We still sit in the glider, too, but we plan on using that for Butterbean when he gets here so who knows what will happen then.  Luke has a twin bed, so it should be possible for me to squeeze my non-PG butt into it beside him for books.
  • Catie's still in a crib, but we're also team glider.
    .
  • I sit on the floor next to DD's toddler bed.  She is laying on her pillow and I sit so I'm almost even with her head and hold the book out for us to both see.  It's definitely not ideal - especially being 9 months pregnant right now - but once she's in a twin I'll definitely sit in bed with her and read.

We did the glider for a long time too - but had to switch that up in the past 9 months or so for an easier transition to the new baby's room.

  • We read on the floor or couch in the playroom and then tuck into bed.
  • We used to read in the glider, but we're a bit of a squishy mess when we do that anymore.  We moved the glider into the living room to have more room to move around in their bedroom, so we just do it on the floor.  Never even occurred to me to read to them while they were in bed, the bars would just be in the way and the way their heads are wouldn't make it very enjoyable.
  • Either in the rocker or on the floor. M is still in her crib though. I'm not hopping over that rail. :)

Ditto.  When DD moves out of her crib (when she's 16) to a bigger bed, we'll probably do story time in bed.

  • We sit on the floor.  There's no way all 3 could see if it was any other way.  I have one of those red circle rugs in front of their bookshelf and we all sit on/around it and then get in bed afterward for prayer/tuck in.

  • We read in bed with him (he has a twin).  It has gotten more and more difficult lately for both DH and I to fit in there with him though (the more pregnant I get).  Lately I've been sitting on a chair beside his bed while DH lays next to him to read.
