January 2011 Moms

While we're thinking...

We are going to start Aiden in pre-school next fall. The cut off is 3 by Sept. 15 and he'll be 3 in July. They also have to be potty trained which he is. We can go through the public school 2 days/week, 9-11:30am for $120/month. Or we can go through the Lutheran Church preschool 3 days/week, 9-11:30 for $140/month.

I keep going back and forth on what to do. The Church is one block over and the school is 4 blocks. We will for sure send him to the public school for 4 year old preschool 5 days/week.

What would you do? Both programs are really good. My neighbors have sent their kids to both and had no issues with either. It's more a matter of how many days I want him to go I guess.

Does it scare you all that you will be thinking about this for our January babies in just over a year from now? I can't believe I'm sending my baby to preschool (even if it is just glorified daycare)

Re: While we're thinking...

  • Shut your mouth. My kid is never going to school!

I was actually just talking with my SM about getting DD involved in some type of organized program (gymnastics, etc) as soon as she's old enough. I want her to learn to take direction from someone other than DH and myself.

I would stick with the public school. This way he won't have to change schools, and he'll be going with the same kids he'll be with for a while (instead of being the new kid in 4 year).

  • I go tomorrow to enroll Joshua in preschool.  It is through our church - two days a week, 3 hours a day starting in the fall.  I hope I get the two days I want- I hear that the current families had a big baby boom in his age range.

During the week Joshua is with DH or one of our mothers during the day.  I think he needs to get out and be in something and get used to being around other children.  I do not have any friends with kids his age.

  • I know - it'll be here before we know it.

I would probably send him to the church for 3 days per week. My thinking is that it won't be such a drastic change to go from 3 days to 5 days - plus it gives momma a nice break. Also, I'm sure there are a bunch of kids that will be doing the same and then all going to the public school together for the following year.

And if 3 days becomes too much you could probably scale back down to 2 I would think.

That seems so soon for preschool...is that common in your area? It might be common in mine I just wasn't aware!!

And SH - I'm taking JT to The Little Gym next week to try it out...ITA with getting him out and into something organized.

  • I am conflicted.  I liked the argument for the public school since he will be going there next year.  I also liked the argument for 3 days a week so 5 days won't be such a big change.  Sorry I am of no help.  I am obviously not ready to start thinking about this yet.  Good luck with your decision!

  • See you girls all raise valid points for both choices. DH and I go back and forth on it right now. In the end neither decision is a bad one for him so it's not a HUGE deal. It's just what will be more convenient for him and our family as a whole.

I've also thought if we have a newborn next year will I want to pack up all three kids to walk or in the car (when it gets colder) to take A there for 2.5 hours and pick him up again 3 times a week or would just 2 days be nicer?

There's a lot of angles to it and I'm really over thinking it, dang it.

  • Im really glad I dont have to make these decisions yet! This is tricky! I would probably do two days at the church.

I don't know if it  is common in my area or not but I am contemplating it because I know I can't count on DH or our mom's to consistently take him to any type of organized activity that they have to stay for.  They would drop off for a 3 hour pre-school class so I am going in that direction.  The director and over half of the teachers are in my Sunday school class and I know most of the rest of the teachers through the church.

That sounds like a great idea!!

OMG, when you put it that way - I would DEFINITELY opt for 2 days.
