Should we get a Keurig?

DH and I are in desperate need of a new coffeemaker. Ours is old and the coffee just doesn't taste as good anymore, despite repeated cleanings. We were going to go with a regular automatic drip, but so many people are raving about their Keurigs, that now we're torn. For anyone with a Keurig, give me your pros and cons. Is it good for everyday coffee drinkers like us? Does it taste good? Is it expensive to buy the pods? Help me decide this very important matter!

Re: Should we get a Keurig?

  • Haha-this is very important! I love our keurig.

Pros: Can make a fresh cup of your fav coffee flavor and desired strength (so if you like it stronger than DH, you hit the smaller ounce button (there is a 6 ounce, 8 ounce and I think 10 ounce button). Don't have to make a whole pot that will sit there until your LO lets you drink it. You can get K cups at the grocery store (around $8 for 12 cups)  BJ's (about $40 for 80 cups) or you can go to BB and get a plastic adapter and put your own ground coffee in (DH does this as he loves the godiva flavored coffee).

Cons: It is more expensive per cup if you use the kcups, takes more time to put the coffee into the plastic thing than to stick a kcup in, but if you are used to making post of coffee, it might not be that annoying. If you have a dinner party, it will take longer to make individual cups, but at least they can pick their flavor, decaf, etc.

I say get one. And if you go to BBB, be sure to use a 20% off coupon.

  • We were going to buy one, but voted against it. The cost of the pods is way expensive.

We did get a 1 cup coffee maker at family dollar for $10 since DH and I like different coffee and leave at different times in the morning. It comes with a reusable liner, so all you do is pour the water in, measure the grounds up to the line, and press start. It takes about 2-3 minutes so its not quick as the keurig but gets the job done.

  • I love my Keurig!  I'm the only coffee drinker in my house so it's perfect for my 1-2 cups a day. I know my bff and her family had to go back to a drip pot since there were 5 of them drinking coffee everyday.

They have many different brands and flavors.  I use coupons and it helps offset the cost even more.

  • One more question I realized I didn't ask: Which model would you recommend? Right now, I'm looking at the Platinum B70 at BBB.

  • You can get the reusable k-cup and use regular ground coffee if you're worried about cost but I only ever buy with sales, coupons, etc, so it's not too bad. Plus, we get them as gifts a lot so we're stocked. Kohl's often has sales and you can use their coupons/Kohl's cash on them, Target does buy 2 get a $5 gift card deals, BBB has 20% off coupons, etc. If you get one, register it on the Keurig site and get a coupon code for buy 2 get 2 free boxes.

Like PP said, there are different size cup options for strength. Keurig (Green Mountain maybe?) sells a 20-oz Travel Mug k-cup, too. Also, if you "like" the coffee companies on Facebook they often give away free samples.

  • I LOVE my Keurig. I use it a lot to make tea since that is the kick I'm in lately.

I have never had any problems with it and I've had it for over a year. I don't buy many K-cups, but I do have a reusable K-cup which makes my coffee & tea life easier and cheaper.

I don't have any cons about it. Fresh coffee that tastes great and it doesn't take long to brew. What is there to not like?

You can get the reusable K cup at bed bath and beyond, WM, Amazon, etc.

  • we LOVE our keurig!  we have this model - https://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11537017

i honestly wasn't a huge coffee drinker till we had this - DH was given it as a gift from his mom.  anyway, i now use it every day!  DH used to stop at dunkin donuts every day for an iced coffee - so for us, while the pods may be pricey, we make iced coffee at home every day.  we buy the pods in bulk online to get better deals on them.  it is so incredibly easy to use, no cleaning really, we program it so it is on and warmed up in the morning, all i have to do is put a pod in and my coffee is done!  i also use the my-k cup to put in our own coffee on occasion to save money, and it tastes fine to me.  i also love that i can make tea with it.  overall, we have had ours for over 2 years and no problems.  LOVE IT!!

When you say you can make tea, is that with a tea pod or can you stick a tea bag or loose tea into the K-cup in lieu of coffee grounds?

  • We have the Cuisinart one and LOVE it!! We got it for a steal the weekend after Thanksgiving though, we had been scouting them out and I was going to use my coupon after Christmas if we didn't find a better price before then.

I was a little intimidated by it at first but it was so worth it. It comes with (and you can also buy separately) the re-usable filter so you can buy coffee in bulk and make a cup from that. But yes, the k-cups are more expensive per cup.

Also, DH and I like totally different kinds of coffee. I only drink de-caff or half-caff and he needs to hit the ceiling from the first sip, lol. I also prefer iced coffee. But if we find an interesting k-cup that we want to try we get them from time to time. I bought a bag of Dunkin' Decaf @ Target on sale and I make my iced coffee from that, a scoop and a half and I've had the bag for almost a month I think.

PLUS you can just get hot water from mine...

    I think that's it...

I just read up on this one, and I love the fact that it can do hot water and also has a rinse cycle!
