Climbing Out of Crib

What...the...$#%#$^

For a couple months now, DD has been pulled up on the side of the crib so her feet were dangling. Then she figured out how to put her feet on the slats to support herself up on the side.

At 3am this morning, I'm watching her and waiting for her to go back to sleep. She pulls her self up, uses her feet .... only his time she uses a combo of arms and feet to pull herself up, up, up. As soon as I saw her feet dissappear off the screen, I went running in there. She was stuck with her stomach on the edge just teetering. If she'd leaned forward, she would have FALLEN OUT!

WHAT am I supposed to do?? Do those crib tents work? She definitely isn't old enough to convert to a toddler bed, right? I'm imagining nights of her standing and pounding onthe door screaming.

So ... what's next?!

Re: Climbing Out of Crib

  • I know this is a dumb question, but you've dropped it to the lowest position already, right?  I only ask because my DD wouldn't have been tall enough to do that at that age.

  • LOL, sorry I should have mentioned that. Yes, it's on the lowest setting. She's on the tall side, although not extraordinarily so. She's 31". Mostly, she's just a good climber. Have I mentioned she can use the kitchen chairs to climb onto the counter? She's like a monkey, and it's giving me grey hair.

OMG, she is like a monkey!  DD's idea of being wild and crazy is to sloooooowly lower herself down from the couch, while squealing "wheeeeeeeee!" like she's doing something dangerous.  Needless to say I have no suggestions.  Good luck with your wild one!

  • How old is she?  If she's just around a year, yeah, I'd probably try the crib tent.  Though I do have some friends who have transitioned really young toddlers (girls, mainly) to toddler beds with a lot of success.

DD is doing the same thing, but she's 2 next month, so we're moving her to a bed asap.

This literally made me LOL. How adorable Smile

DD's idea of danger is to try to jump down the stairs, or off the counter, or out of her cozy coupe while it's going full speed, or slide on her own down the big kids slide at the park. I think someone forgot to tell her she's a girl?

I think I updated her ticker appropriately, LOL. She's just barely a year, and I just cannot imagine her being free in her room at night. 1. I think she'll fall out of her bed. 2. She's like a tornado and I don't think she'd stay in her bed if given the choice (obviously). I think she's going to run from toy to toy to toy until she's board, and then she'll pound on her door and pitch a giant fit. I wasn't mentally prepared for this for at least another year. My mother just told me I was still in a crib at 4 years old.

I'm going to investigate crib tents. I hear horror stories, but I don't think she's mature enough to handle a toddler bed.

  • I've heard of people putting their crib mattress on the ground inside the crib (like taking the springs out completely). Would that work? Or is the back taller than the front? If it is, you can turn the crib around so that the shorter side is against the wall.

No, the taller parts are on the end, and that's what she was climbing over anyways. Huh?

How could I put the mattress on the ground inside the crib? This sounds promising, but in my head I'm picturing a space between the mattress and the bottom crib rail that she could just crawl out of? I'll have to look when I get home!! Or heck, maybe it'd be enough to keep her in there? I'm going to investigate this!

  • i'd get a crib tent

This is what we did and it worked awesome!  There was no gap between the top of the mattress and the bottom of the crib, so it seems perfectly safe.

Good to know! I'm hitting up BuyBuyBaby on the way home to pick up a tent, just in case, but I'm going to try this first. I mean really, anyone can brag about their kid being advanced, but advancing themselves outta their crib at 12 months? Nothing to brag about because she's not advanced in the "I'm gonna be FREEEE in my room" kinda way. That would probably result in my drinking myself to death.

  • If you know your child can climb out, dont put her back in! My daughter climbed out one morning and i put her back in a naptime and she climbed out and broke her arm...on carpet! She needed surgery and pins. I know it sounds crazy, but it happened to me! I would just put her matress on the floor until you figure out what you want to do long term. Good luck!
