My son will be 3 weeks tomorrow and still only 5lbs 4oz. My husband is worried about taking him places and even 2 hours to visit my family. I understand his concern with it being flu season and the risk of RSV with our LO. We have been in complete lock down since we came home from the hospital. I don't want to take DS to mall or anything, just maybe to visit friends and family, but DH is being really stern with his view. I was wondering how long you are waiting or did wait to start taking LO out and about? Is there a certain lb that you are waiting/waited or a certain age of LO?

Re: Go out with preemie
It isn't really about weight, but lung and immune system strength. We had a micro-preemie and were pretty much on lockdown from September to April. We DID however, take her to my mother's for Christmas, which included a 3 hour flight. We gave family members strict instructions, however, to not come even in my mom's house if they had so much as a sniffle; everyone had to wash their hands before holding her, and we didn't go out to eat.
Maybe you guys can come to a compromise and wait a month or two, until the worst of flu season is over? You could ask your doctor for advice, but they tend to err on the side of caution.
Hmm, that'a a tough one! I might be on the conservative side on this one because it freaks me out when people take full term babies out in public when they're newborns. My friend took her LO (born @ 38 wks) to Walmart at 2 or 3 weeks old. That just freaks me out!
LO was 35 wks and came home at 39 wks (4 lbs 10 ozs when he came home), and the NICU basically said to keep him home until his 8 wk shots! It was the summer, so I personally would follow the same guideline especially since it's flu and RSV season.
I had a 31 weeker born in December. He came home in Feb. We were on lock down until Cold/Flu and RSV season was over in May.
I am going to offer another opinion. No one ever told me to keep a child in. The day she came home from the hospital, she went shopping with me.
I probably wouldn't have gone shopping that day but she came early, and came home earlier then expected so we litterally had NOTHING (a size 3-6 sleeper, and crib, and exactly 1 bottle).
