Soliciting suggestions for affordable birth announcements

DH and I are trying to save money now that DD is here.  However, I'd like to use Shutterfly to send out some birth announcements.  I think this is most likely the most affordable route (if you have other affordable suggestions then I am open).  My question is, did you take the pictures yourself that you put on there? Or did you go to a portrait studio and have them professional taken?  Did you get the CD?  How much did that cost?

TIA

Re: Soliciting suggestions for affordable birth announcements

  • I took a picture myself a few days after Alex was born. I designed the invites in Photoshop and had them ready to go minus the picture and his birth stats before he was born. I had it printed locally at Minuteman press which ended up being quicker than Snapfish or Shutterfly because I didn't have to pay to have it shipped.

  • I used my own for Abby. For Emily, I found a nestie from here who was willing to do some photos for "Free" as part of learning her trade. I'm pretty sure I said thank you with some sort of gift card or other gift besides singing her praises here!

There are definitely nesties here with more mad camera skills than the people staffing the JC Penney photo studio!

I've also printed my own on cardstock and had custom cool ones done. Both made me happy. It depends on the quality of your picture and the design you have in mind.

  • Once you have the picture you want (either via a professional or your own camera), there are lots of sellers on etsy who design super cute birth announcements for $15 for a digital copy. THen you can get it printed wherever you find a good deal.

  • Costco's a lot cheaper than Shutterfly if you have a membership.  We used our own pictures and they turned out okay...we've since gotten a better camera.  We put the pictures we really liked of her on there and only needed to "take" one.

  • I did mine through v i s t a p r i n t. We had photos taken, but you can take one yourself. They actual announcements were really quite inexpensive.
  • We didn't do birth announcements, (I wish we had!) but for our Christmas cards I had DH design them in photoshop and then printed them as 4x6 photos at Walgreens.  The print quality wasn't great, but it's hard to beat 10c a card.  They even threw in envelopes.

  • I know some people that will do this and then glue to paper...colored or scrapbook variety to give it a nicer look for not that much more money.
