Bedsharing & Breastfeeding

DS is 9 months old and we bed share.  Recently he has started sleeping worse than he ever has.  He is waking up all the time and will nurse and go right back to sleep, but early in the morning sometimes around 1 he will wake up every hour to nurse before getting up at 6.  I am starting to get frustrated, but I am not ready to give up bed sharing or breastfeeding...suggestions?!

Re: Bedsharing & Breastfeeding

  • Have you tried sleeping in such a way that your DH is in the middle.  That way, if your LO cries your DH can just pat his back and comfort him back to sleep.  That may only work a portion of the time because sometimes your DH really WILL still want to nurse.  But the other night wakings may be cured by having your DH rub his back a bit.

  • Sleep interruptions statistically peak at 9 months, so it may not be anything you are doing and is just a phase related to socialization/teething/growing/anxiety. That said, I feel your pain! Having DH help get LO down has been our key recently. At 12 months, LO has just exploded in babbling and understanding us, so now we tell him that "milkies are asleep, so he should go to sleep, too" and DH cuddles with him. Sometimes he gets it, sometimes there is crying and protesting and frantic "milk" signing, but he is starting to get it. more and more We went from waking to nurse every 2 hours since 7 months to getting in two 3-4 hour stretches a night (yay!!!!).
  • This has been us too, it hasn't gotten any better but I have gotten to the point where I hardly even wake up. Often my breasts are exposed because we both fall asleep and she kinda just latches and helps herself when she wakes up. I have no desire to night wean or stop bedsharing, so I kind of feel like this is the easiest solution for now and just hope it passes.
