Diaper Bags Are Challenging.

I've looked at like 3 billion diaper bags and none of them look good to me. Either they don't have the side bottle pockets like I want, or they cost more than the crib, or the color/material is all wrong.

I never thought they would be this hard! Has anyone found their 'dream diaper bag' yet? I'm looking at Vera Bradley ones now but I can hardly justify spending the $100 on the color I want because those are really spring/summer/fall bags not winter.

  • What if you register for one and you get in for your shower?

  • I fell in love with the Skip Hop Studio diaper bag. I love the charcoal dot color, on Amazon and other sites it's $90, I found it on BRU.com for $55. I ordered it last Monday and received it Friday and I'm so in love with it! Can't wait to use it! I love all the pockets and how it doesn't look like a traditional diaper bag, it looks more like my favorite Coach purse than a baby bag. It also has Skip Hop's special stroller clips.

  • I'm not having a baby shower. I only have 2 friends where I live (military) and my family has no money and are really far away. I'll go visit home but I'm 1 of 3 in my close knit extended family having a baby this year, none of us have much money so we can't afford to do showers/gifts for everyone.

We're on our own for everything.

(This is nothing new. I didn't get a bridal/wedding shower either... lol or birthday parties after kindergarten.)

That's really cute! You probably don't have to wait to use it. Break it in as a giant purse. :)

  • I also remember getting a really cute one for my sister last year when she had her son at target. It had the mat and the side bottle business. I don't think I spent very much on it.

  • My sis and BIL have a Columbia brand backpack-style diaper bag, which I always really liked b/c you can easily sling it on your back when your hands are full, sling it on the stroller, plus it's "manly" enough for daddy.  I was at a baby store that was going out of business this weekend and got this Phil & Teds brand backpack.

  • I may have just found 'the one' if it is really the one I'll post a picture after I get it. (I'll order it Wednesday!) I don't want to call it the one and be wrong...
  • I will probably either reuse the one used with DD or use one of my many 31 bags that would do.

  • DD is almost 10 months old, and I still haven't found one I like.  I am on my third right now.

This. They have 2 "steals" a day. You just have to watch out for them because they have a limited amount. When it's something good they go fast!!

  • I bought a JJ Cole diaper bag with DS and I think it was about $90 and I used it for maybe 2 months and I hated it, I ended up buying a Lululemon gym bag, and a separate change mat, and I love it 1000X more!

  • I had 3 diaper bags given to me with my DS.  My H used one, as it was a little more masculine, and I hated all three.  I ended up finding a non-diaper bag that I loved.  It had multiple outside pockets, separators inside and was super light.  I'd also look for some used ones, especially with mom's moving off base and selling stuff before they go.  You have plenty of time to look.

  • I am getting a Petunia Pickle Bottom bag, and it is totally out of my comfort zone money wise but I do not care that is going to be my one big splurge and I must have it. I have never bought myself any type of expensive handbag, I always pick up cheapies at TJ Maxx so DH was absolutely shocked when I showed him the price on the diaper bag I want, bc he knows I just don't go out and spend a lot on something when a cheaper version would work as well.

But when I saw these bags I absolutely fell in love with them! I told him I don't even care what pattern I get I just have to have one. I justify it to myself bc I bought a used wooden glider rocker from Goodwill for $20 and I am buying a used dresser for nursery for $50, so I have room to splurge on that bag.

  • I have two petunia pickle bottoms bags, the first one I paid full price, then I discovered their outlet sales, they do it seasonally. Up to 60% off. My 2nd one was only $70, compared to it's original price of $160.

  • I got the Skip Hop Versa bag in black...

Then I ended up with my Jujube BFF... it's fantastic!

  • I HATE diaper bags. I have never come across one that I like. I made it through the whole first year without one - I just found a large purse/tote with pockets on the inside that I really liked and it worked perfectly fine. Over the summer I broke down and got the Harper diaper tote from PB Kids - it looks like a large tote bag instead of a diaper bag. I think they have one on sale now for super cheap.

  • I love my Petunia Picklebottom Shoulder Bag (in Frolicking in Fez) :

     https://www.petuniapicklebottom.com/collections/original/shoulderbags/frolickinginfez/

It is glazed and so easy to clean.  I still use it and ds is a toddler! It is a great size, and also is perfect as a carry on when we fly (which we do a lot).

  • I would suggest to stop looking for a "diaper bag" and start looking at bags that can be used as a diaper bag.  I got a black canvas duffel from Fossil which had 6 outside pockets that fit bottles perfectly at an outlet store.  It was/is perfect.

  • We just use the smallest size of LL Bean backpack for DS's diaper bag.  It has his name embroidered on it and everything--too cute!  I was just telling DH the other day that having two little backpacks will be so cute, haha!
  • here is a thought- if you know someone that sews you could have them make you one- you can pick out your own material, and there are so many patterns out there that you could combine aspects of different ones to meet your preferences. My mom is making my diaper bag, but it will really end up looking like a larger purse, with all of those wonderful pockets on the inside. Amy Butler has some really good diaper bag patterns that are a good place to start...good luck with the diaper bag hunt!

  • I had a vera bradley one with ds and bought a new vera for this one.  I used it so frequently, it was worth the $ to me.

  • Here are the two I have, the Scout one made by PBB is the one my husband sports when he has DS, his is brown with olive green though, mine is the other one. It's perfect for the stroller too.

  • I think I had about 4 different diaper bags with DS.  I liked the JuJuBe one best.  It was pricey but worth it.
