Eggs

I know eggs are a common allergen and they aren't supposed to have them for awhile. But how far do you take it? Baby boy eats bread that contains eggs. I also add eggs to a potato casserole that we have given him. Last weekend I gave him a nibble of the crust on a quiche and wiped off the egg. But in hindsight that was probably too close to the no no zone. Strawberries are risky too - but I have given him fruit out of a fruit salad that touched the strawberries, without giving him strawberries themselves. How careful are you about the known allergens?

Re: Eggs

  • We're pretty relaxed, and our ped is supportive. Food allergies don't run in either of our families, so we aren't super strict about the one-year rule. DD has had scrambled eggs and strawberries so far. She's also had the crust off of toast with PB so chances are she's ingested some of that, too. When we do introduce a food with higher potential for allergies, we do watch her very closely for a few days. Scientific research is really contradictory on whether delayed introduction of allergenic foods has any benefit at all, so we aren't on the vigilant end of the spectrum on this one.

  • Our pedi said no egg whites until 1 year, so I'll probably stick with just yolks for now, though I haven't given her any yet..

We don't have a history of food allergies, but I'm conservative when it comes to feeding the wee one.

  • Since we don't have a history of allergens our pedi said we can feed her 'allergen' foods so long as we space out the introductions by at least a week.  She's had strawberries, peanut butter, and whole eggs.  She often has peanut butter and puree sandwiches for lunch and scrambled eggs for breakfast.

  • We did strawberries a month or so ago, I wasn't really worried about those at all. Just did eggs this past weekend, but I gave her both the yolk and white scrambled- I watched her after but wasn't worried about this one either. We will wait on nuts until after a year though bc my husband has a tree nut allergy. I'm pretty laid-back about food allergies in general though- just keep an eye on them and it's usually fine!
