Hi Ladies,
I was just wondering if anyone has had an experience with having a c-section and low platelets? My LO is still breech and I am scheduled for a c-section 1/24. My platelets have dropped to 80,000. I am recieving steriods and IVIG this week. Just wondering if anyone has any insight or anything to share. I know if my platelets don't come up to at least 90,000 to 100,000 I will have to have to go under general.
Thanks
Re: C-section and low platelets
I had the exact situation as yours with DD. Low platelets around 85,000 and breech position. They checked the platelets the day before and as long as they didn't go down further I was able to get the spinal. Nothing happened and was able to stay awake. The c-section went smoothly with no complications. From what my Dr said, platelets can get "stuck" to the sides of the arteries during pregnancy and the tests will show you are much lower than you really are. (not sure if that's accurate so don't quote me).
GL and I hope you won't have to go under general.
I had low platelets. I was severely dehydrated in early labor and they were measuring at 71. The anesthesiologist said if I were to need a csection he would not place an epi and would do general.
After rest and rehydration they rebounded high enough to place the epi line. I didn't have any meds run through it bc I wanted to try for natural birth but I was scared my platelets would crash again. I ended up taking the epi and needing a csection anyway but I was in luck bc my epi was already in place so I got to be awake.
Best of luck. I was terrified I would miss the birth of my daughter so I know how upsetting it can be.
