Points For Originality? The Name Game

I really like the name Alistair, but not sure how a nickname would work. Or, what kind of ridicule he'd get in school. So...I randomly flipped open my name book, and pointed with my eyes closed to a name, and got MacAlistair. Now, I'm really liking MacAlistair. I don't think I'll add a middle name because MacAlistair is so long. But, you get this handy-dandy built in nickname of Mac.

What do y'all think of either name? Talking to my belly, I really liked saying, OK, Mac, off my bladder!

Re: Points For Originality? The Name Game

  • When I think Alistair/Alisdair, I think of two people most of you have probably never heard of

    1. Alistair Cooke, the original host of Masterpiece Theatre on PBS

    and

    2. Alisdair Gillis: The 80s You Can't Do That on Television Star who I had a huge crush on.

Personally, I'd just go straight with Alistair, but I have never been hung up on nicknames. My name is Megan, but nobody calls me Meg. My daughter's name doesn't have any nicknames. Just be prepared for them to pronounce it like Alice-stair.

  • Hey, I'm AMA, of course I've heard of You Can't Do That On Television! First time I'd heard of Alanis Morrisette! I think I recall the PBS guy. But, the one that comes to mind for me is Alistair Sim, an old Bristish actor. Was the title character in Scrooge.

  • I like Alistair! ...I'm not big on nicknames either.

  • I love Mac!  Alistair or MacAlistair are a little too 'out there' for me personally, but I think they are still fine names!  There is a college nearby called Macalester, (emphasis on the k sound), so while it seems a little strange as a first name, it also has a really nice ring to it.

  • It's a tough choice but I think I like MacAlistair.  It's still got a classic feel to it, but with a modern twist.

  • With Alistair he might be called Al. But I like both names!

  • I think Alistair is a great name but I kind of hate MacAlistair. It's 100% a last name in my mind and does not translate well into a first name.

I also don't think that nicknames are necessary and that you shouldn't pick a first name for the nickname.

  • I love the name Alistair...not so much MacAlistair, last names as first names are NMS.  You could always  just call him Mac if you like that nickname... For example, my friend's dad has special nicknames for his daughters: Scout (Alexandra) and Junior (Megan).  PP mentioned that Al would be a nickname kids could call him.

  • My uncle is named Alisdair and we call him Sandy.

My friends brother is an Alistair and we generally just call him by his full name, with the occasional Al

  • I like Alistair better than MacAlistair.

I'd also like to chime in with DS' name is Harrison, but I loathe the nickname Harry and don't care for Harris, so I just don't use a nickname. We call him Harrison and quickly correct anyone who tries to call him anything different. We'll do the same for Archer when he gets here.

  • I would honestly just go with Alistair. My main reason being that MacAlistair is more of a last name (i.e. one of my best friend's last name is McAlister). Smile
  • My DH and I chose the name Alistair for our sons middle name we like it ALOT!!!
