Travel and Time Change?

My husband and I are traveling to Hawaii for a week in March and we have what will at that time be a 6month old... I've heard others say that they keep the time zone the same for the kids (immediately change the clocks to 'home' time and live by that while on vacation), so there won't be any difficulties upon return with schedules, etc. In theory it sounds great, but I can't imagine how to really do that - putting him to bed at 5pm?? and having him wake at 5am (Hawaiian time)???

What do you do when traveling to other time zones for a short time???

Thanks!

Re: Travel and Time Change?

  • We traveled from Seattle to Orlando (3 hours difference), and I kept DD's schedule the same. At home, she eats at 8, 11:30, 3, 6:30, and 10. I had her eat at those times in Orlando, too. Typically, at home, she goes to bed around 8 (we wake her at 10 to eat), so we kept that the same in Orlando, as well. The first night was the hardest since the time change hadn't quite kicked in yet, but after that, it was no problem at all. She also did just fine upon our return home.

  • We've always adjusted, but I take my cues from DD.  If she seems tired, I put her to sleep.  If she is hungry, I feed her.  Especially as little as 6 months, she didn't have much of a schedule even at home.  I would never wake her up, figuring she needs the sleep.  Have a fun trip.  Get lots of sunshine, that helps with the time change.
  • I think it's easier to keep baby on home time when going east since it's rather convenient.  We went to the Caribbean last year and just kept DD on Seattle time which was really convenient; however, going west is harder.

If I were you, I'd aim for something in between and also go by baby's cues.  Good luck!

  • I guess if it's possible for you to keep similar hours as you do at home and you think that's best for baby then go for it. We have traveled to the east coast several times with the baby and we adjust the next day to eastern time zone. There is no way I could have kept her on the same timing / schedule as I do at home because we are there to visit family. I can't just ask them to change their day for us. She always did fine though, I am not sure if even if we had changed her schedule that she would have been that much better off. It is still a change of scenery (ie sleeping in a new bed) for them and they will still be adjusting to that.
