Babies: 9 - 12 Months

help! dd stomach virus- just puked all over me!

first of all, i have a life long vomit phobia so im freaking out over here. i have a stomach bugged baby and DH is going out of town tomorrow at 5 am so i'm by myself.

DD has had diarrhea 6 times in the last 48 hours.   while she was nursing to sleep tonight she threw up breastmilk and bananas (she's been eating banana and rice cereal since the diarrhea started).  i feel so so bad for her.  i kind of freaked, called DH and he helped clean me and her up, i calmed down, and then soothed her to sleep.  she was fine five seconds after she threw up, burped big and loud, then wanted to play again while we rocked.

waht do you feed your puking baby?  shoudl i do solids?  jsut let her nurse? less food?  help!

  • Fluids are most important. If she wants to eat food she can, but nurse first. If she continues to vomit/have diarrhea and isn't drinking well then give her pedialyte.

  • I would cut out all solids and nurse as much as possible.  BM is digested quickly, so even if she does vomit, some of it should be digested.  I would only use Pedialyte if she refuses to nurse, or if you can push some to get extra fluids in her without decreasing her BM intake.  I hope your LO feels better soon!  Thank God for husbands who step up when they are needed.  My hubby always does the clean-up duty when I get puked on (which has happened more times than I'd like to remember. ;-)
  • I second the nursing over solids advice. My DD has had something too and the only thing that stopped the vomiting was cutting out solids and just nursing. We have given her some oatmeal with good results. We tried reintroducing solids 3 times with no success. She is such a pukey mess each time. We need to go back to the Pedi if the next attempt doesn't work either. We're going to do it more gradually this time though.

Give your on call nurse a ring.  They will help tons.  Basically I echo what others have told you.  Cut all solids until it stops.  Offer BM or F.  If they won't take that down, then you will need to go to Pedialyte.  I have learned to always have two bottles of it on hand at any time so that I don't have to run out to the store with a puking baby if I were by myself.

  • I would just keep nursing her over anything else- including the Pedialyte. Hope she feels better soon!

  • We were told that if baby was nursing, no pedialyte. BM is easier to digest than pedialyte.

Here's a kellymom link to back it up: https://www.kellymom.com/health/illness/baby-illness.html#Pedialyte

And no solids until she's keeping down BM. If she hasn't kept down BM and shows signs of dehydration call pedi immediately.

  • thanks everyone, your advice really helped.  today was LOONG.  i just nursed today, for a few minutes at a time frequently earlier and on demand until satisfaction later.  no more vomiting and a "better" poop were my reward :).  along with a VERY cranky baby who gave me the evil eye whenever she caught me eating solids.  I'll try a tbsp of rice cereal tomorrow and hope for the best.  Luckily DH is back so I'll have support!

Sorry, but this made me LOL!  My DD would do this too. . . she loves solid food and "begs" like a little puppy every time we are eating something she can't have (chocolate, dairy. . . ).  I hope your LO continues to get better.
