January 2012 Moms

how are all the moms doing?

How are all of you that have already had babies doing?

Here at our house things are going well for the most part. Rhett sleeps well at night (so far) and is eating well BUT he does not nap well during the day and I am worried about that. :(

Do you have any advice? I rock him, I have tried the swing but he hates it, and sometimes just lay him down in the pack n play when I need to go do something.

  • We are doing pretty well and things are looking up!  Our girls sleeps like a dream all day, but wakes up constantly all night - boo!  On the other hand we have to wake her up to feed and keep her up long enough to eat, but it can be very difficult.

As for me I am healing, but still swollen and sore though.  I was pretty proud of myself for taking the dog for a walk this afternoon.

Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • Things were going very well until Cora got sick (respiratory virus) and at this point, we are on a wait and see sort of basis to see if she needs to be admitted. If she gets a fever of 100.4 (which scares me because DS had this cold before her and had a high fever), she will be admitted to the NICU/PICU and have a ton of tests run - including a spinal tap. :(

At this point, she sleeps all the time unless she is eating, but until she got sick, things were going well too. She's a pretty good sleeper (so far!) so we'll see how long that lasts.

Laying your kiddo down in the PNP is totally fine!! We've always put our kids down drowsy, but awake, and they've been very good sleepers. Do you swaddle? That might help too. Also, making a "Shhhh shhhhh shhhh" sound can help settle an infant, so you might try that while rocking him to see if that does the trick (white noise or static radio works too). Good luck!

  • We are doing better here. DH and I went out to dinner last night and then hung out with friends for a few hours while the ILs watched Mariah. It was really nice to get out but I was happy to get home.

Engorgement is GONE! Woohoo! So are my massive boobs though. DH is sad.

Baby is up to eat every three hours. Like exactly every three hours almost day and night. Its not too bad really.

She doesnt sleep well any where except when she is cuddled up next to me which is sweet and I love it but its also a little annoying. I'm trying to enjoy it though because I know it won't last and then I will be sad

  • My little Guy has his days and nights mixed up, so he keeps us up alll night and sleeps all day.. I'm healing up pretty well!

  • Pretty good! She's pretty much got a pattern- 2-3 hours sleep, .5-1 hour awake (change, feeding). And 2 hours in the morning when she's more active/alert. I would love for the nighttime sleepings to increase though!!!

  • She is doing great! She was a champion latcher out of the womb do breast feeding is going so well! During the day she eats every 3 hours and at night I wake her every 4 (I'll stop when she gets back to birth weight). She sleeps great and prefers to be left alone to fall asleep- which is exactly how her sister was.

  • My LO is still on the inside, but I work with a lot of pediatric nurses, and they've told me to not let her sleep more than 2 hour stretches during the day.  They also recommend a "dream" feed around 10-11p (basicaly just not turn on lights, talk to her, keep her as sleepy as possible while feeding).  This sounds all well in good, but not sure it will work.

My friend recently had a LO, and she was very successful getting her to sleep by swaddling, then doing "arm circles" with the baby in front of her, while Ssshhh'ing loudly.  Typically her DD would be asleep within a minutes or two.  The arm circles were done over the crib with the baby cradled in her hands in front of mom.  Sure there is a better name than arm circles, but that's my description.

    Good luck!

  • We're only four days in, but LJ has been just great!  My milk is already starting to come in, he's latching on like he's done this before, and he's nursing for 20-30 minutes at a clip, every 2-4 hours (TG he's going four hours overnight, as of now at least...it's such a treat!).  We're heading home today and I'm looking so forward to getting into a routine at home with him.

Our 6 1/2 yr old has been fantastic so far and I'm anxious to get into a routine between her usual activities and taking care of the baby and figuring everything out so she never feels neglected (that may be wishful thinking, but I'm hopeful!!!).

My incision is healing nicely so far and my pain is being kept at bay nicely with minimal meds.  I've had hardly any bleeding, which is another treat (I bled like a stuck pig for six weeks after my section with my daughter).

I do have a sinus infection in the works - I'm happy that my Ob just gave me a script to start on that's safe during BF'ing, to nip it in the bud and to save me a trip to my PCP to address it as I take care of our newborn and recover from my section!

Bruce and I are doing great! I'm pretty much back to normal just a tiny bit sore still. Bruce is quite the little piggy and was up past his birth weight at his 2 week appointment on Wednesday. Some days I feel like a dairy cow because all he wants to do is eat but for the most part he goes 2 1/2 - 4 hours between feedings. He's been having a lot of gas the past couple of days which was making him a beast but those gas drops seem to be little drops of miracles because they work instantly and he settles right down. Other than that he's such a good baby. He loves to snuggle but is also perfectly happy to sit in his swing or bouncy seat. Our fur babies have also adjusted perfectly. They have been so well behaved and are very gentle with Bruce. They are glued to me when I breastfeed and if he's crying they go sit right by him. My dh has been amazing too! He loves sitting and rocking bruce for hours while I take a quick nap. I love our little family :)

  • Things have been going pretty good around here. Ben is the sweetest little baby and he only cries if he really needs something (food, diaper change). His days and nights are confused. My mom gave me a tip that another poster already talked about- at nighttime don't talk to him or turn on the lights. Yes, it's hard to change by nightlight, but he's slept better the last two nights.

I am so sore still- but feel like I doing a smidge better everyday. I'm thinking about taking the dog for a short walk today.  I guess my big disappointment is that I am unable to EBF. I just don't have enough milk, in fact Ben's getting mostly formula and just a little from me.

  • Hanging in there. BFing has been the hardest thing I have ever done in my life.  Ever.  Keeping E awake to eat is hard and we've had latch issues.  I don't feel like we are in any sort of routine other than feeding every 2-3 hours.  DH goes back to work tomorrow and I'm worried about how things will go, especially because right now it takes both of us to feed her.  E does sleep pretty well at night, though, which is good.

  • I had a really bad bout with the baby blues, but I'm doing much better which has made everything easier.

I'm still breastfeeding with the occasional formula supplement. Maeve isn't gaining weight like she should so we'll see what her pediatrician recommends tomorrow. To be honest, if I have to keep her at the breast around the clock, then we'll switch to formula. I know I'll be miserable if I'm locked in the house doing nothing but breastfeeding and that's not good for her.

As for sleeping, she LOVES her bouncer so maybe try that? We also give her a pacifier and the combo knocks her right out.

  • We're doing much better the last few days. Matthew only cries when he is gassy, which he is a lot, although that seems to be getting a little bit better (or maybe it's just my imagination). For the most part, he still has his days and nights confused, but he is sleeping some at night (average 3 hours at a stretch) since I started co-sleeping with him. This wasn't something I planned on doing, but he much prefers sleeping next to me, on my chest, or in my arms than in his crib or PnP. DH has been amazing - doing the cooking, cleaning up the kitchen, changing diapers, staying up with the baby if I need a nap. Last night he took the baby until 4:30 this morning and I actually got about 4 hours of sleep, which is the most I've gotten at one time these days.

Things are settling down a bit and I am glad of that. He's a pretty good baby overall. I agree with a PP that breastfeeding has proven to be the hardest thing so far. I don't have many latch issues or anything like that, but there are days it seems Matthew wants to eat all the time and my boobs could really use a break sometimes. I have been starting to pump and can get 1-2 ounces, which we then use to feed him by bottle when mommy needs a break or if I have to go out and run an errand and he gets hungry. This morning, I actually pumped close to 2 oz, which is the most I've gotten in one pumping session so far.

As far as healing goes, that has been going really well. The worst thing I have a problem with as far as that goes is that these freaking pads chafe the heck out of me - I even resorted to using some of Matthew's diaper rash cream after I got out of the shower today to see if that would help. My bleeding is minimal at this point and I'm hoping it will completely stop soon.

Now if only I could get more sleep and figure out how to better juggle everything. Oh well, he's not quite 3 weeks old yet. I guess I'll try to give myself a break. Wink

  • I am almost concerned about how much Layla sleeps.  But I admit it is very nice. Her dad and I are HUGE sleepers, so maybe she just inherited our abilities:)  She wakes up every 2-3 hours all day and all night, so she is getting plenty of food in.  She has some periods where she stays awake for an hour or so but then goes back to sleep.  She only cries when she needs a diaper change or is hungry.  This is a dramatic change from the first few days where she was not getting nearly enough food because my supply is so low.  She cried non stop for 2 days basically.  Ever since we started supplementing with formula she is a new baby.  I cried the first bottle I fed her, but to see how happy and content she is, I no longer feel guilty.  I give her as much breast milk as I can, and pump several times a day.  It takes me about an hour to get 2 oz.

My husband is wonderful and very helpful.  We take shifts at night.  One will sleep on the couch and get up with her every couple hours to feed while the other is in bed.  Around 5-8am, we trade and the other goes to bed for a few hours (we are night owls...bed around 2 and up around 11).  This way we get at least 5 hours or so of uninterrupted sleep, then I get another few hours of on and off sleep.  So I am getting at least 8-10 hours still, overall.  This will change shortly when he goes back to work.  I will go to bed around 12, and he can stay up with her until 3 or so like he normally does, then I will take the rest of the  night.  I won't be working and don't mind sleeping between feedings.  he will be working and I want him to get a full 8 hours.

She has been sleeping in her bouncer, the Snug a Bunny bouncer.  She sleeps the best in there.  I don't turn on the vibration becasue it makes her throw up, but she just likes the position.  I am putting her for naps in her crib to get used to it.

That was totally me with DS#1! The diaper cream wasn't the best but I used baby powder and that helped a lot. Don't feel bad, it goes away eventually!

  • What are the gas drops that you mention?  My little guy has a lot of gas, and I'd love to help him feel better.  Thanks.

Mylicon or Little Tummies (L.T. is less expensive and it's the exact same product, just not a "designer brand").

  • im fine, getting tired emotionally. the house is a mess, my bf goes back to work tomorrow and my older son is starting to act up more.baby is doing good.

my son gets picky about sleepin, he has to be skin to skin and that helps everything. even if its just his head on my bare chest, unbuttoning hid outfit and on my bare tummy both work great when he is fussy.

  • Its rough! My ex isnt really around so im doing things by myself, my mom and sis have been a great help though. She is battling thrush and has a fissure right now so baby is not a happy camper but all in all I love my little booger and love waking up to her :-)

She eats every three hours, I was supposed to breastfeed but it didnt go as planned so she is on soy milk. She loves to sleep up under me and she also sleeps well in her rock and play.

  • It's going okay...I'm not doing great emotionally right now. Hard case of the baby blues. I'm crying as I write this, holy crap! My older girls are sick with a stomach bug and it's stressing me out. Sleep issues are stressing me out. My house is stressing me out. Breastfeeding is stressing me out.

Bonnie is super sweet and is really a good baby so far. I'm just so hormonally stressed right now and can't wait until things get into the new norm. I don't like change!

Breastfeeding is hard. I wasn't able to do it with my first two and am trying really hard. She's been better at latching than the older girls were, but there are still some latch issues. I think my supply is finally coming in. I've been supplementing with a bit of formula and bfing and pumping as much as I can. I think she's jaundiced, we'll see at her dr appointment on Thursday.
