Re: I feel silly for asking this...

  • those sounds like contractions to me. they might not be regular and you might not be in labor but they sound like contractions.

for me i had a ton of bh for a couple of weeks before he was born and they just got progressibely more intense. my whole tummy went hard, they would peak at the most painful part halfway through and then go back down and tummy went soft again. when real labor started it felt the same except like there was a bowling ball pushing against my cervix.  hope that helps!

  • Technically they are contractions, but I understand what you mean about them not being timeable. When I get them and they're constant, I time the tightening as that comes and goes. My doc explained that the constant type of crampy feeling is the dilation/effacement. When u can't talk through them, or feel like they're increasing; call. gZl

  • I have been experiencing the same thing! I am a FTM mom too, so I never quite know what I'm experiencing.  For me, my tummy starts to get really hard, then turns into a period cramp and wraps around to my back.  I time it, but they are not regular like yours.  Hopefully we will have some success here soon!! GL!

  • Thank you for this thread! I have been feeling the same thing as OP but have never experienced any BH and my tummy doesn't seem to tighten during the cramping.  It was especially intense in the middle of last night and I was up for a couple hours waiting for them to either subside or turn into something timeable/measurable.  I figured that my body is just getting ready...

  • I'm a ftm and didn't know what contractions felt like. I would have some odd pains now and then but the night I went into labor I wasn't able to sleep. I didn't feel tightening just sharp pains in my lower abdomen and also a pain in my bladder area.

  • FTM here too, and I delivered my baby 3 days ago. I had the same feeling as OP, they were just tight, ballling up feeling, as if the baby was pushing his thighs up high into my ribs. Doctor told me they were contractions, but I couldn't time them either. I didn't know how far apart they were b/c it wasn't really consistent (the 5-1-1 rule didn't apply to me). Dr. told me I was already 3cm dilated at my overdue appt. He said I could go to the hospital then or the following day. I decided to wait until the night and see what happens. The menstrual cramping did get a worse, but wasn't intense and was manageable, so much that although I did get up in the middle of the night, I was able to go back to sleep. I decided to wait until morning, and decided to go in at 6AM into the hospital. When I went in, I was dilated at 5cm. It wasn't until the doctor broke my water that lower back pain and cramps REALLY kicked in.

I waited until last minute b/c I couldn't decipher if they were real labor pains, but apparently, reading from PP and from my experience, there is no "by the book" rule when going into labor...(unfortunately).

Hope you have your baby soon, and GL!
