how do you know if milk has come in?

Hi! I had my baby on Tuesday evening. She is nursing every 2.5 hours and we are supplementing with .5 ounce of formula after each feed. We are supplementing because she was on the border of having lost 10% of her total birth weight. She is now 4 days old. How do I know if my milk has come in? She is sleeping for 3 hours at a stretch at night and sometimes 4 hours. Thanks for any tips! We are taking her to be weighed again on Tuesday so hopefully she has gained some weight by then.

Btw, we had a beautiful baby girl and we named her Leela :)

  • Your boobs will feel heavier. You might also see more of a white color after she gets done nursing instead of the yellow.

    Congrats on your dd!

  • Your boobs will probably be very full and heavy until your body regulates your supply to meet LO's needs.

You can "milk" yourself to check (squeeze with your thumb and finger, pulling forward.... much like you would milk an goat or something) or you will also notice LO with milk dribbling out her mouth if she falls asleep while nursing  (awww... the milk coma... I love that!).

GL and congrats on your baby girl!

  • Your boobs will hurt and sting like hell, but it does get better!   They will feel like they are going to explode!!

  • In my experience, if you are questioning it then it probably has not!

I knew - it was very obvious. It was 3 or4 days after she was born.

in addition to the boob heaviness, baby will start having frequent yellow poops. we're talking mustard yellow.

if you're worried about your milk, make sure to nurse on demand as long as the baby wants to nurse. try not to keep a schedule.
