Texas Womens w/ regular OB or hospital close to home?

I know this is a pretty good ways out, but I want to stick with one OB throughout the entire pregnancy.  I am at my RE's office until 10 weeks so I still have a short time to make a decision.  My OB/GYN who I have been going to for approximately 2 years only does deliveries at Texas Womens and another med center hospital.  The only problem is that I live in the Champions/Spring area--it is quite a drive.  The closest hospital I would actually want to go to is the St. Luke's at The Vintage, but most of the docs who have privileges at that hospital seem to be "spa" gynecologists as opposed to true "baby delivering" OB's...on other words, if you go to their website it is all about botox and spa services.  I like my current OB, but I don't like the idea of being so far form the hospital I would deliver in.  Another option entirely would be to look for an OB in The Woodlands.

Any recommendations?  Should I stick with my current OB who knows me and who I like and go with the farther away hospital or find one who sees patients nearby?

Re: Texas Womens w/ regular OB or hospital close to home?

  • I live in the same area as you and delivered all of my kids at Cy-Fair Hospital.  A friend will be having her first at Tomball Hospital.  I have had many friends deliver at St. Luke's in The Woodlands.

For me I wouldn't want to drive down to the med center for all of the visits, but if you love your current OB it may be worth it to you.

  • What she said. I definitely wouldn't want to have to drive into town for a pregnancy related emergency or in labor or really anytime! Its a plus to have one close to home you trust. I live near you too. Check out St. Lukes, Methodist Willowbrook, CyFair Hospital and even Memorial Hermann Woodlands.

    Good luck!

  • I need to pick a new OB because the one who delived DS is now only a gyn. I have tons of good referrals for docs in the med center, but we want another baby so we are sticking with a doctor close to home. The farther you get in your pregnancy you will have an appointment every week, and I don't know about you, but I don't want to drive to the med center that often.

If you are looking for a Ob/gyn in the Woodlands, I suggest Dr. Laden.

  • I would stay close to home. St. Lukes or Methodist Willowbrook would be great choices. I live in Pearland and delivered at Methodist in the med center - it is a straight shot up 288, a very easy drive in normal conditions. During rush hour on a Thursday morning - it was awwwfulll!! I basically went from 0 cm to 5 cm in the car on the way to the hospital. So, yeah, my choice would be as close to home as possible. :)

  • If you're close to the Vintage then you're also pretty close to Willowbrook. I used to nanny for an OB that now works at Methodist at Willowbrook - Dr. Traci DeSplinter. She is phenomenal and definitely NOT a "spa" doctor. She is a surgeon and used to be a fertility specialist.

    Good luck!

That's good to hear! Dr DeSplinter was my RE when I got PG with DD. I absolutely loved her personality. I've been thinking about switching to her for gyno.

  • My concern isn't with the appointments because I already work downtown. I'm more concerned with getting to the hopsital.  I just know how bad traffic can be at times. Thanks for all the input!

  • I actually lived with them for a year and a half as the nanny for her girls. She is a really nice person and I could tell how much she cares about her patients!

Also, she works closely with Jessica Lee and has had only nice things to say about her. They moved from Tomball to Willowbrook together. I've only met Jess once but she seemed really nice!

LOVE Dr. Lee!! Had to switch doctors cause another doctor has better coverage with my insurance but I would have loved to get to stay with her!! :) She's great!

  • I toured Cy Fair hospital and it was gross. Methodist was nice but I did not agree with some of their standards for newborns. They said the newborns would leave mom for up to two hours for tests etc. We live in Cypress and are delivered at Texas Woman's. They have "baby friendly" initiatives and we actually met with their CEO and she is AMAZING and gave us names of OB's. LOVE my OB (Dr. Ivonne Smith) and love the hospital.

Just out of curiously, who is your RE? I went to Dr. Williams at HFI.

  • I delivered at Cy-Fair Hospital since it was close to home. Plus I didn't feel like having DH and family pay for parking for each time they come and see me in the hospital. DH stayed with me throughout the night at Cy-Fair with out no issues from the nursing staff. I know other hospitals allow only same sex people to stay in the room with you. My OB/GYN (Dr. Stephanie Smith-Sham) is one of the greatest OB's out there. Even though my labor was very difficult and not like your regular textbook c-section. It is one that scared my doctor and also my husband. Still to this day my OB and I are very close. I can call her with any health problems (female related) and she will always return my call. Throughout my hospital stay she continued to check in on me and also DS who was in the Level 3 NICU at Cy-Fair for 6 days after birth. She didn't have to but she went above and beyond the whole L&D part. I would personally stay close to home for the L&D because you never know Houston traffic and if there will be road closures.

  • Memorial Hermann at Memorial City is close enough to downtown and just about 20 minutes from Willowbrook if you take the beltway. There are a lot of fantastic OBs there and they have a great NICU just incase, as well.

I went to Dr. Hickman at Houston IVF.  I really like him alot...I have gotten a little frusterated with a couple of the staff at times, but all in all it has been a good experience. Plus, he got me pregnant on my first round of ART!  And I had some pretty poor stats - FSH 13.3 and AMH of .54.  He said I had about a 10 percent shot, but it worked!  I think alot of prayer helped, too. ;)
