Pump cleaning?

When would I need to clean the actual pump part of my pump? I clean the flanges, bottles, etc. every time I pump but I've never cleaned the actual machine part. The instruction manual gave instructions for cleaning if milk gets into the tubing and then the machine, but if this doesn't happen is their any routine cleaning that needs to occur? I have a Medela PISA if that makes a difference!

Re: Pump cleaning?

  • I clean my PISA at least once a week, or as soon as I notice milk in the tubing.  My weekly cleaning involves taking the diaphragm cover off and wiping down the membrane with soapy solution, then a damp cloth and finish with an alcohol wipe.  I also alcohol wipe the knob and button and make sure that the lines are clean.  After washing the tubing with soapy water, I rinse with clear water and use a syringe to shoot rubbing alcohol down the tubing and then spin the tubing so that the excess alcohol runs out and then dry by letting them run on the pump for a few minutes. I've heard that the PISA has a problem with moisture collecting behind the diaphragm cover, so I'm just more proactive about preventing that.

  • I've never cleaned my pump and I've been EP for almost 5 months. I did take the cover off a few weeks ago, but it didn't look dirty and there was no moisture.
