Gone are the days...

...of having to switch bottles mid-pumping session. I would like to laugh at old me on that one.

Anyone else? My supply has gone down a bit but I still seem to meet lo's needs. Question though - does anyone typically get two let-downs while pumping? I never have but wonder if I should pump for longer to try and get more.

  • Wow, I've never had to do that...I've always pumped exactly what LO takes from a bottle, and sometimes an oz less. I'll get a 2nd letdown once in awhile, but not consistently.

  • i've only experienced a second let-down a handfull of times.  usually i just get one letdown and my breasts are empty by 6 or 7 minutes.  i typically pump for 10 minutes.

but yes, i've found that i have to switch to a new bottle less frequently.  i still make more milk than dd2 drinks, so i'm not concerned yet.

  • I only got a 2nd letdown once- when pumping in the car and trying to console a screaming, impatient baby so I couldn't turn the pump off and suddenly more milk started coming out- at around 12 mins.  I usually stop pumping between 8-10 mins when the milk stops dribbling out.  Since then I tried waiting until 12-14 mins to stop but never experienced that again.  Of course, I rarely pump, and get super impatient to be done when I do.  My supply has never been great, but generally meets M's needs.  I've never pumped more than 3.5oz in 1 sitting- but again, I rarely pump and when I have it's generally been after she's fed off at least 1 side.

  • yup I was sad about it the other day...I hadn't pumped in AGES so when I was pretty much empty at about 3 oz I almost cried.  I know that it's only because she doesn't need the 6-10 oz I used to pump, but it's just another reminder that she's growing up faster than I want her too Crying

As for two let downs...I don't think I've ever experienced that...I did find that i got a little more when drinking milkmaid tea (even though I can't stand the taste)

  • I've never gotten a 2nd let down, but I know vigurl does regularly. I think even 3 sometimes. I've tried pumping all the way to 30 min before on her suggestion, but it just doesn't happen for me.  Now that I pump at work, I don't have time to try.

  • I've got a single pump, so I always get a second let down when I start pumping my second boob. And, I'm impressed that you ever had to switch bottles! You need that power pumper sticker, lol!

I have a single pump, too, and I sometimes have 2 letdowns per side. I have to be relaxed, though, so if I'm watching TV or playing on my phone, it's more likely.
