Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Tall baby needs car seat

DS is 29 inches at 7 1/2 months.  I fully expect him to remain in the 90th percentile for height for a while.  Needless to say, our infant car seat (Snugride 35) is almost done.

Any recommendations for car seats for taller children?  I've done some research and have come up with the Radian, Britax Boulevard and the Britax Frontier (the latter seems to have one of the highest shoulder harness heights at 20").  I'd love to hear thoughts on those or other recommendations.

Thanks!!!

  • Thats how tall DS was at his 6 month shots yesterday at the dr said not to worry about it, he will bend his knees. So I'm keeping a close eye. Sorry I'm no help but I'm thinking we may be upgrading to the convertible soon too.

  • My 6 month old is 28ins long and we have this car seat. It goes up to 100lbs, and I love that I can adjust it to keep him rear facing for a longer time.

  • The Frontier is out, because it is for children over 2 years and 25lbs, and it does not rear-face. Rear-facing is recommended until the child is at least 2.

The Radian, First Years True Fit, Evenflo Symphony, Graco Smart Seat, and the Britax Marathon would all be decent choices. I would probably go with the Graco or the Evenflo based on the fact that they both turn into decent boosters later on, so you will get a lot of use out of them unless your child is abnormally tall and outgrows the harness.

ETA: FWIW, it really depends on your child with the Britax seats as well. My DD is about to be 4, and she still has tons of room in her Britax Marathon seat. My neighbors almost 5 year old, just outgrew his Boulevard, so she had to switch him to a Graco Nautilus (which doesn't rear-face, so isn't a good option for you).  So, just know that either way, depending on your child, you may end up getting another seat down the line. We just bought my DD a Recaro ProSport for my car, and she will likely stay in that for another 2-3 years.

  • We got the Diono Radian RXT and it will absolutely accommodate a very tall baby. It also has a deeper bottom shell than the Truefit and Marathon so he will have more room for his legs (not a safety issue, just a comfort one). We installed it in the middle of our 2010 Ford Edge using the seatbelt and DH can still drive and he's 6'2 with very long legs.

  • DS was 30 inches at 6 mos so we had to get a convertible, we got the brutal advocate 70 cs. We like it, should last until 70 lbs and its rear facing until 40 lbs.

FWIW, no kid will see 70 lbs in that seat. The weight limits for forward facing are kind of a joke, because unless you have an obese child, the height is what matter the most. I think most kids outgrow the seat around 4 1/2 or 5 depending on how tall they are. My DD is the exception, she is tiny at 38" and 30lbs. The seat will expire before she comes close to outgrowing it.
