MRSA Staph infection- DH

Okay ladies google is not giving me too much help so I turn to you...My DH came home from dr saying he has MRSA staph infection. I remember my cousin having that and they had to take part of it out and she was contagious for weeks, could not be around anyone.

Well I freak out and ask him if he can be around his son or his pregnant wife- he said he will call the dr since he didn't say anything. Well the nurse he talked to said "MRSA is no joke but unless there is discharge you should be OK, don't touch it though" ummm ok- that doesn't make me feel good. He is on antibiotics but since he just started I am assuming he is still contagious.

Anyone have experience in this area??

Re: MRSA Staph infection- DH

  • It depends on where his MRSA is. A wound, urine, nose? If it is in a wound as long as you keep it covered and do not come in contact with the drainage or open wound it is fine. If it is in his nose that poses a whole other issue because if he sneezes it will spread.

  • i work in a hospital and when a pt has MRSA they are put on contact precautions, which means anything i do i with them i wear a gown and gloves. That being said its more for the protection of other vulnerable, immuno-suppressed patients than my own safety. so considering you may be immunosuppressed because of pregnancy  I would wonder what doc will say? i guess it will all depend on the seriousness of the infection. He will be given antibiotics to get rid of it. And fyi MRSA is everywhere! You may even be a carrier and not know it. Usually doesn't affect you unless you are ill. Hoping everything is fine for your family!
  • It is on his ear and neck- wound...it looks gross, but is not oozing anything. He changed all the sheets and I will call the OB this morning, thanks for the help ladies
  • MRSA is spread like any other bloodborne disease, and it is contagious.  Also, most people remain carriers of MRSA once they have it, and so it can flare up again in a wound or skin irritation.

  • I had staph (although not MRSA) when my sister was pregnant and my aunt was in chemo.  My doc said it was fine to be around them as long as I kept the wound covered.

I know you can purchase special soap and detergent that is seriously strong for MRSA infections.  Cannot remember what it is called, but your DH's doc would know the name.  It may be expensive.

You could call your OB and see what he/she says regarding your DH's MRSA infection.  They may have some advice.

Best of luck to your DH.  I know the antibiotic for MRSA is a horse pill.
