Labels question (Moms of 2 or teachers!)

I remembered I had a $30 Mamapedia coupon thing just in the nick of time! I'm getting some teeny tags for Abby's lunch box for Kinder next year. She still has 1 bag tag from our previous order 3 years ago. Emily will be starting MDO in the fall. Need more sticky labels for both of them. I've been using up their shoe circles from their combo pack on other stuff even!!

From a teacher perspective, is it OK to use our last name and only order 1 set of labels? Or should I really have first and last name? I keep going back and forth. I also was thinking that having a different design makes the recognition easier for Emily. Her current labels are the Mabels Ocean colors with the old star design. Abby's are the princess with a smiling sun. Both are inspired by their favorite songs. So I'd need a new design from their collection too.

I'm leaning toward separate labels...

  • For elementary school, last name only should be fine (but I don't know for sure). But depending on where Emily is going for MDO and whether or not you are marking food/drink things (cups, snacks), you may be required to put at least first initial and last name for her stuff. I know for licensed infant-care centers, its law that bottles, sippy cups, and food stuffs have the child's first initial and last name at least. In fact, we just had a state visit this week and that was one thing they checked for in our fridge.

MrsBeckO- do you happen to know if that's true for preschools that don't have infants?  Kate has some labels, but they only have her first name on them.  I was hoping to use them for preschool next year...  I think the place she will be going accepts kids as young as 18 months.

  • I really don't know.. it may very well just be an Infant Room thing on account of the crazy number of bottles and cups and food jars and tubs and pacifiers there are floating around at all hours. KWIM?
  • You know what I just thought of? All of Emily's will need to be printed with her Peanut and Egg allergy anyway =( The more places it says it, the more people will see it and know, the lower her chances of getting exposed to something that might kill her.

I guess Abby gets her own Cupcake labels.

Sorry for the probably unnecessary quoting here, but good catch, mama!

And thank you, because this post just made me realize I should probably update Cam's peanut allergy labels at school - hers have photos but her photo was from like 16 months old and she looks a teeeeny bit different now. ;)

I thought about getting just name labels for the next order, but I like the idea that when a teacher/the nurse opens the med cabinet in the sick bay, her photo-labeled box kind of jumps out at you among the sea of med boxes and bottles.

  • I have a carseat label template that also has Emily's allergies on it!! You just use packing tape to secure it. It's basically free except for the printing. So EMS/Fire/Police know not to give her PB which along with graham crackers is a staple in ER's everywhere. I can email it to you if you're interested.
