A weird sleeping problem, does this happen to anyone else?

My sleeping lately has been awful. I have no problem falling asleep (especially when I'm watching a show that I really want to see), but then I'm awake by 4:30am and I cannot fall back asleep. Also I've been sleeping on my left side more and I wake up with my left ear burning hot and its so painful just to touch it. So then I can't lie on my side for at least an hour after that until the pain goes away in my ear. Does this happen to anyone else? The ear thing is not new, I've been having that problem since I was a kid, and it happens to my sister too. But anyone else I've asked about it, they look at me like I'm crazy.

Also, I bought a body pillow but it doesn't seem to help much. Should I invest in a snoogle or other pillow? What do you all recommend?

  • Snooper is the only thing that solved this same issue for me! Good luck!

  • By "painful to touch it" it sounds like the pain is on the outside of the ear?  If that's the case, I'm not sure what you should do.

If the pain is IN your ear, like the kind of pain that comes with an ear infection, then you might have fluid build up in there.  I get fluid in my ears a lot because of allergies and problems with tubes when I was a kid, and when it's built up, it KILLS in the middle of the night (on whichever side I'm laying on, like you said).  If you think that might be your problem, try taking Mucinex for a couple days to drain the fluid.  Works like a charm!

Yep its the entire outside of my ear - and it's bright red and hot to touch. Isn't that strange? It happens almost every night now that I'm trying to stay on my side.

  • My ear hurts after I sleep on one side for too long. I just figured it was because my ear was smushed for so long.

  • Yes this happens to me, I had to invest in a very good memory foam pillow and it has helped. If I sleep on one side too long my ear hurts so I flip to my other side same problem happens after several hours so I turn back. But the memory foam pillow helps so much. I noticed this started happening to me after I had my first migraine when I was 19. This may be what has occured with you as well. Buy a memory foam pillow for your head and you can purchase a pregnancy pillow to help, the Snoogle however has to be used as a pillow as well which is why I didn't go that route because of my ear problem. I bought the Preggle you can use your own pillow for me that was a must. Your not crazy I know exactly how you feel...

Thank you so much! I'm so glad I'm not alone. I actually do have a memory foam pillow that I haven't used since we moved so I'm going to get that out and start using it tonight. I just looked at the Preggle on amazon and I'm going to get it. Thanks again :)

  • I fall asleep early and wake up early too...but I wake up during the night when I'm sleeping on my stomach, because I have such a full bladder that it's painful! Crazy...

Me too. But it has nothing to do with my ears.

I do get this strange things when sometimes, due to nothing I can think of, one ear gets really hot and red. I don't have to be laying on it or anything - sometimes it's just in the middle of a normal day....

This for me too. I just assumed it was because of sleeping on my side for so long.  I was usually a belly sleeper, so more pressure was on the side of my face then my ear before. I figured my poor ear just needs to adjust.
