Stonybrook Midwives (my experience so far)

Hi girls,

It's a big decision finding the right practice/hospital for you so I thought I would share my experience.  I started off at Womens Healthcare of Suffolk, and while it was good when I WASNT pregnant, it was crazy overkill once I was.  I was never really told what was going on, they lost my appts several times, I always had to wait to see a nurse or get a sono, etc!

I was concerned because of the idea of the midwife - I still wanted scans and a hospital birth, because this is my first and it's comforting knowing I have everything there if I need it or something goes wrong.  I also still wanted testing - albeit not crazy testing up the wazoo.  I've been to the midwives twice already and am all set for my third visit and second scan (around 20 weeks).  They've all been VERY nice and comforting and supportive.  I've also liked that they have included my husband, as he comes to the visits with me and likes to be involved.  They really teach you about what's going on, and explain what your options are for testing, etc. without a bias.  The staff is also very pleasant, and the man who did our sono was so wonderful!  They warm the sono gel and try to make everything as pleasant as can be for you - and they also give lots of pictures :D

I was so lost before I found this place, and although there are some reviews, most of them are older, so I thought everyone close enough to Stonybrook should know how wonderful it is at the midwifery office.  They spend a lot of time with you and you rarely wait at all - if you do, it's not more than 15 minutes on a REALLY busy day.

I have some issues with my weight and having a baby really makes me nervous because I feel a lot of anxiety about gaining.  I know this is a common problem, and I just want to let you know, they really don't judge and are very sensitive and kind.  I had an internal exam around 8 weeks because I was having some issues, and it was super relaxed she was so gentle and supportive, explaining what she was doing and feeling every step of the way - no crazy barging into the patient rooms, no mad-house feeling, and finally, a place that TELLS you what's going on!  I can only pray that my labor is as wonderful as my prenatal care has been so far.  Don't overlook them because they're a midwifery (I almost did) - they work under very qualified Stonybrook OBGYNs.

Only caveat is there's always a touch of traffic in that area, but IMO it's worth it.  I'm in East Northport, so I'm seeing their north office and midwives.

 Hope this helps someone!!

Re: Stonybrook Midwives (my experience so far)

  • I too went with the Stony Brook Midwives for my first pregnancy and cannot say enough about this practice. I went to the East Setauket office. Having midwife care and delivering at a hospital truly was the best of both worlds. All the midwives were great, but Jessica delivered my son 6 weeks ago and she is an absolute angel. I had a completely natural birth - something I wanted terribly but never truly believed I could do. She was so encouraging - I still can't believe I did it with no drugs! Even if you aren't considering a drug free birth, the midwives are still a great alternative to a traditional OB. That's what makes them so great - they support you no matter what type of birth plan you have. They are also one of the only practices on LI that does VBACs and I highly recommend them for anyone interested in one. I actually have my 6 week PP appointment today and will continue seeing the midwives for all my GYN care. If you are considering going with a midwife, go to their Meet the Midwives seminar they have every first Thursday of the month at 7pm. You get to ask them questions and go on a tour of the beautiful new maternity ward at SB.

  • Just wanted to chime in here, I'm now 21 weeks and the level of care is still wonderful! I'm almost a little worried that I'm going to be let down when its time for L&D because this prenatal care is leaving me feeling spoiled!

  • Thank you!! I am going through a similar experience. I used to live in ENpt and I really like me OBGYN but I don't want to deliver at Huntington (it?s over an hour from my home) and I really like the idea of a Midwife. My main concern is my husband's feelings about not going with a doctor. Everything you said about the tests they can do (if needed) and how they treat your husband has made me 100% confident in my decision ? a midwife is what is best for us.

I am calling today to make my 1st appointment.

  • Hi there,
So i just found this post and was wondering if any one had input on a question i have:
I'm 10wks with my first, and am all for the natural birth and i want to find a midwife- i just went to the open house for the StonyBrook midwives last night with my husband, and we really like the feel of the whole maternity unit, the actual midways- BUT.... i have concerns about not knowing who is going to deliver the baby, seeing a different dr for every appointment- i was hoping to find a midwife i would have throughout the whole pregnancy and delivery... so any input?
    thank you!!
