C-sections

How long were you immobile for post c/s?

Every time I talk about it people seem so surprised. I was really not mobile for a week after that I was moving around the house and going up and down stairs. I slept in my bed again after the 1 week appointment. I feel about 90% now at almost 4 weeks.

 How about you?

Re: How long were you immobile for post c/s?

  • I think I was pretty mobile by about day 3.  I was moving around the hospital room quite a bit without overdoing it the first few days because my nurses told me the more mobile I was, the better off I would be.  I rarely stayed in the bed - got up in the mornings, showered, sat in the chair a bit, bathroom breaks, moved to the couch, etc.  I was in the hospital for 6 days due to an internal infection but by the time I came home, I was moving around really well.  Still sore, but had no problems going from room to room, standing up/sitting down.  In and out of bed was a challenge but I just kind of log rolled until my feet hit the floor then pushed up with my hands.

  • After my first (emergency) c/s I pretty much lived in bed for about a week. It hurt SO bad just to get up. I had to have DH bring DD to me to nurse and sometimes needed his help up to get to the bathroom. My second (planned) c/s was much better. I was up as soon as my cathater was removed (12 hours post-op) and walked to the bathroom and back whenever I needed to go. When DH came in for the morning (he spent the nights at home with DD#1) it was about 18 hours post-op and we started doing laps around the whole floor. I felt a bit stiff (but not necessarily sore) on those first few trips to the bathroom but once I started walking everything loosened up and I felt pretty good. I'm sorry you had such a rough time. If you decide to have another I hope the next one is much easier for you!

  • I was hobbling and kind of bent over for a few weeks.  I couldn't get in our bed for three weeks!  I slept on the couch.

  • I was out of the hospital bed after they removed the cath so, I could pee, take a shower or move to the rocking chair. I was hunched over and shuffling my feet but, I was up moving!

  • I was up and out of bed both times as soon as I could get the catheter out - so around 8 hours with DS and 6 hours with DD (I pressured the nurse until she agreed to take it out).  The first 24 hours were slow going but I'd say I was fully mobile by the next day.  No problem going upstairs to bed by the time we came home.

    My c/s were both planned.

  • I was up and moving the next day. Just a little at first, like to the bathroom and to the wheelchair. But my son was in the NICU so that's what really motivated me to get out of bed. I couldn't just lie there and not see him. By the third day I was walking myself to see him, slowly, and pushing my wheelchair in case I needed to rest. But once I got out of the hospital (thankfully he was able to come with me) it didn't take too long to recover. I'm 5 weeks now and I feel completely  fine, other than some numbness at the site. I still won't overdo it though. Honestly I'm just happy to be able to cough or sneeze without having a minor panic attack -- cuz man that seriously hurt! Had to be the worst part of recovery.

  • I was up and walking 12 hours post c/s. It was slow, but I did it. We walked the halls twice a day then until discharge 3 days later. I was walking slower than normal, couldn't sit up easily, but I was moving. I went for my first power walk 7 days post c/s and went for a run 3 weeks post c/s.

  • A day or two. By the time we were home I only really needed help getting off the couch, or in and out of bed. By day 5 I was driving, shopping, going out for lunch, etc- pretty much felt like normal except soreness upon standing up and not being physically able to lie myself down.

  • I had my c-section early on a Monday and was up and moving around the hosptial later that day.

I was off pain killers by the next day and only stayed in the hospital for two days.

Recovery was very easy for me.

  • They next morning after my C/S I was begging them to let me get moving. The nurses were surprised that I wasn't asking for pain meds. The one nurse insisted on giving be ibuprofen so I had that. I was begging to walk around and get things moving because I wanted to be able to eat. I had not been allowed to eat for almost two days. I had an emergency appendectomy three years ago (ruptured) and when I had that I was a hot mess. I couldn't get out of bed so I think to an extent I was a little more prepared for what was going to come. I was a little sore but only if I over extended myself which happened twice. I need some things from the store and needed to get out because I was going stir crazy. We had been in the hospital for a total of 5 days.

  • I had an emergency c-section with general anesthesia and was up and moving within 12 hours of surgery, carefully.  The next day, I was walking around the floor of the hospital.  I was moving slow, but moving.  I think that really helped my recovery.

  • I was sore for weeks, as far as getting out of bed, sitting down in a chair, stairs, walking, etc.  Walking was a joke.  I had to keep the wheelchair in front of me and stop to breath at each corner.  It wore me out so bad.  I didn't recover well apparently because other people seem ok in a few days.  I slept in our guest bed (which was in the living room from my bedrest) and DH slept on the couch so we could be "together" but I could lie really still and try to get comfortable.  DD was in the NICU 8 nights and still at home DH had to help me up out of bed to tend to her.  My incision pulled open a little too which made things more uncomfortable.  I have to disagree about the moving as soon as possible.  The worst of the c/s was the day after I first got up to walk.  I was in tears.  I think you need to let yourself heal before you start worrying about getting up to work stiffness out.  And I got up about 4 hours after the surgery so for me the sooner to move was not the better!
