What is safe to take with a cold while Bfing?

I have a head cold {which I caught from my daughter} what can I safely take while bfing?  Is nyquil OK?

Also has anyone else had a bad cold and their supply just tanked?  Did your supply come back up?  A cold and I'm about to get my period is wrecking my supply.

  • I would not take nyquil at all. I used it when I was sick a few months ago. I took it at 7 pm and didnt bf the baby until 6 the next morning. The pharmacist told me it was safe to bf if I waited that long however.... my supply tanked and it was beyond a struggle to get it back up to a "low normal" level. My Dr. told me that it drys up your supply due to some active ingredient in there. I wish I had given more thought and not caved in and taken it b/c now we're 100% formula feeding now.

Use sailine drops for runny nose, hot steamy showers, tylenol for aches and cough drops or tea with honey for your throat. hope this helps and i hope you feel better soon!

  • When I had a bad cold before I talked to the pharmacist and the nurse at my pedi and was given the ok to use dayquil/nyquil.  They told me to stay away from the alka-seltzer cold medicines because more of that would transfer to the baby through the milk. Not sure why that is, but I went with it.

My supply tanked big time when I got the flu in October.  I'm not sure that it ever got back to where it was before, but it definitely improved. I drank lots of fluids, drank that nasty tea, continued with my fenugreek, etc.

I hope you feel better soon!

  • NyQuil is generally safe. The sleep help in it is the same as in Benadryl which is safe enough for pregnant women. By the time you're bf-ing a 8-9 month old you can get away with almost anything.

It's common for your supply to tank when you're sick! Drink lots and lots of water and get as much rest as you can. The regular fixes for boosting supply usually work, too: oatmeal, nursing more than usual, mother's milk tea/fenugreek, but I find that the water works the best.

  • Currently I'm taking nothing.  I've been drinking a ton of tea, gatorade, and water.  I think my head is going to explode soon.  I can't get through the day without anything, but I need some sleep.  Maybe I'll try a benedryl before I go for the nyquil.
  • Most things are safe- however, anything containing dyphenhydramine or any other decongestant will dry up your supply. So if you don't want to do that, mucinex is your only real option.
