Crib transition, when and why

DH has been pushing me to get DD into her crib in her room for weeks now. I don't see the point right now. She is 14wks, and sleeps in the co-sleeper on my side of the bed. She goes to sleep by 9pm and gets up twice to eat (2am & 6am).

Once in a while, she'll fuss for a couple of minutes, but nothing some patting and shushing can't handle. It is just so much easier to reach over and calm her before it gets too much to handle.

If you've made the transition to the crib in LO's own room, when did you do it and what was the reason?

Re: Crib transition, when and why

  • I moved lo to his crib for a few reasons. He was almost 6 weeks and had started giving me six hours for his first sleep strech so I thought it was a good time. I had a feeling I was waking him up as well, I turn alot in my sleep and I think I was interupting his sleep. I also wanted my husband to be able to sleep in his room again, he has a physical job and was having trouble falling back to sleep when lo was in our room so he was sleeping in the living room. Once I moved him he started sleeping much better and I think it was good to do before he cared where he was sleeping. He didnt even notice the move and he is still next door to my room.

  • We haven't moved dd yet and probably won't for a long time.  When we moved ds, it was because I was starting back to work and he was a very noisy sleeper so it was keeping me awake more than necessary.  He was also getting to the weight limit of the bassinet.  It was my decision, dh could sleep through a tornado so he wasn't bothering him.

DD will probably be in our room for quite some time.  We're moving next month and she will have her own room then, so we may move her at that point, may keep her in our room even longer.

  • We moved LO when he was 1 week old.  We came home from the hospital after he was 4 days old and at our 1 week appt the doc suggested we try it out and we did.  Now we have a 9 week old that sleeps 6+ hr stretches with no problems.

  • DS has been in his own room since the day after we got home from the hospital.  Every noise he made freaked me out, and I couldn't sleep.  We had him in a bassinet in his nursery after that, until he was 4-5 weeks old and got his brace for his hip.  His legs were too wide for the bassinet, and he kept waking himself up, so we moved him to his crib.  He does almost all his naps in there  as well.

  • He's been in the crib since we got home.  I knew transitioning would be hard (on me!) and thought it would be easiest to just start him out there.  My niece and nephew are 11 and 8 respectively and they still sleep in their parents' room.  I have friends with 3 year olds who are still in their bed.  I just didn't want it to get to that.

  • DS has been sleeping in his crib since he was about 8 weeks.  I made the decision to put him in his own room because he was starting to get too big for the Moses basket we used in ours.
  • We'll be transitioning DS after our visitors leave this weekend.  Main reason is that he is waking up too easily.  If DH or I toss and turn in bed, it wakes him up.  When DH gets ready for work in the morning, it wakes him up.  So I think it is time for the kiddo to have his own space where he can sleep with less commotion around him.
