Bacteria found in initial urine sample...

My drs office just called and told me they found bacteria after testing from my first apt. They called in a 7 day antibiotic to the pharmacy. The nurse didn't seem overly concerned and, although I tried to ask questions, didn't fully answer me. She just compared it to the strep b test at 36 weeks.  Has this happened to anyone else? It didn't happen with my first two pregnancies.

  • That happened to me too. Apparently it's totally normal so I didn't worry too much.

  • Yep, that happened to me last time. I just didn't get the group b test at 36 week and had to have the IV antibiotics at delivery.

  • I have it too, I just finished a round of antibiotics and I'll get an IV in delivery. No worries, about 30% of women have it.

  • As in a UTI? They are completely and totally common in pregnancy (and even more super annoying when you already feel like you to pee every 5 seconds already)!

  • I had it too, its totally normal.  the antibiotics were worse for me than the UTI though, because it seemed like the always made me more nauseous.

  • It is called asymptomatic bacteruria.  It is common in pregnant women and if untreated puts you at risk of kidney infections.  That is why they screen everyone.

  • According to my online chart, my urine sample was positive for bacteria.  It looks like they tried to grow a culture from it, but the sample showed no growth.  The nurse didn't call about it, so I assume I'm fine.  I'm going to guess that if the culture would have showed growth that I would have been put on antibiotics.

Most urine will have a small amount of bacteria in it, because the labia aren't bacteria free.  The only way to get a completely clean speciman is by being catheterized, which obviously they do not do routinely.  Most of the time when you have a urinalysis done, they do the rapid test, and then send it out for a 24 hour culture to see if the small amount of bacteria has colonized into anything.
