Hi Moms!
LO went in for an RSV shot today and for some reason had a doctor I have never met before. She was very young and annoyed me from the start when she asked why we were there. I have a thing about doctors not lookinh at the chart before a visit, but I digress. LO weighed in at 8.9 pounds and was 3.11 at birth 11 weeks ago. This doctor, let's call her Doogie Howser, said to stop giving her Neosure because she has "gained so much weight." Then Doogie said that LO doesn't need the 25 calories from Neosure. This bothered me because number 1, Neosure is 22 calories and number 2, my LO is nowhere near where a 3 month old should be regarding weight.
I needed a script for the iron drops LO has been on. She didn't want to give them to me then I reminded her that preemies often become anemic and she said "oh, that's right" and wrote the script.
LO then started bleeding A LOT from the shots and Doogie left, as blood was running down LO's leg.
Sorry for the vent, now for my question- did you take your LO off Neosure when they started to bulk up? She has been gassy and her reflux isn't getting better with meds so I would like to try something else but for some reason I can't shake this feeling that if they gave it to her in the NICU it's the best and she should stay on it.
Thanks for listening!
Re: Neosure question / minor pedi vent
My daughter bullked up quite a bit on Neosure--she was on it for almost a year, and the neonatal dietician said the purpose of Neosure is not the extra calories; it's loaded with the nutrients babies usually get in the womb during the 3rd trimester. She even said it's unfortunate that they don't make one in lower calories for babies like mine, who needed the nutrients but not the extra calories.
Depending on how early your preemie was, the dr may think it's not necessary to stay on Neosure as long as some are, but leave that up to your regular doctor or a neonatal dietician, not a dr who doesn't seem overly invested in your baby's growth.
I'm with you! I'm going to keep her on it.
This was my argument too- the calories are great but it offers much more than that. I ended up calling and talking to one of the doctors that we always see. She wants the baby to stay on Neosure and then the doctor who owns the practice called me to find out what the origional doctor said. They all want me to keep her on Neo and that's what I;ll do. I have to say that this doctor today seemed a bit unaware of preemie needs but I feel better because of the response I got when I called.
Thanks for the responses ladies!
