PT'ing - what should be my next steps?

V's had a little potty for awhile.  She likes to sit on it (and the big potty too), loves to wipe, will often read books (potty or other), likes to watch me go...basically shows a lot of interest.  She inconsistently tells us when she has to go. Although if she actually has to go, she doesn't usually want to use the potty.  She did go poopy on it once.  This same behavior has been going on for months.  I've been in the don't rush it camp...just encouraging her behavior, but no pressure.

Well...I think I may need to do something to push this to the next level (and bonus if she was potty trained before the twins come late March/early April). Running around with NO pants isn't the best option.  We're at my parents house until March 1 when our house is ready and i don't think they'd go for it.  PLUS...it's cold here in Mass, even inside, and she really should be wearing pants.

My mom and DH were all for training pants -- but does that just extend the process?

Thoughts? (and old PT'ing post links you saved are so welcome!)

  • How old is she?  I have always been in the camp that believes training pants/pull ups are just a different kind of diaper.  Great if it works for your kid, but they are still diapers.  If she understands the concept of going in the potty and can communicate with you reasonably well about the whole process, you may want to jump in with both feet and do the 3 day method.  In a nutshell, you stay at home for 3 days and the kid goes in underwear.  No more diapers.

It really worked for us but my DD was ready (she was 2.5), and we've never looked back.

  • IMO, the next step is to move to panties and do something like the 3-day method if you're really wanting to push it. Once you go to panties, do not go back to the diapers (during the day).

We decided to wait until DD was ready. She was showing signs of being ready at around 21 months, but she wasn't actually ready to go on the potty until about 2 1/2. We got lucky because daycare potty trained her and she was around other kids that were using the potty.
