Lullabies

Which lullabies do you sing to your baby?

I use the term lullaby loosely to basically mean any slow/pretty song that I can remember the words to. I sing

Tell me why (my mom used to sing it to me)
Silent Night (started at Christmas and kind of kept up with it)
Amazing Grace
Hush little baby
Somewhere over the rainbow (except I never remember the words)

Re: Lullabies

  • I used to do Somewhere Over the Rainbow all the time when she was tiny (like 2-4 weeks).  I know I sang some Taylor Swift and some Adele while I was on mat leave too.

Last night I started singing a mostly tuneless group of sentences about people who love E, i.e., "Mommy loves E, Daddy loves E, Grandma loves E ..." etc.  I would like to have one song, either already in existence or something I make up, that would be "ours," but I haven't landed on it yet.

  • We sing all sorts of songs, but at night I sing my own words to the Lullabye song.

Something like "Go to sleep, go to sleep my sweet baby.." etc.  I try to do the same words every night, but really whatever I sing seems to do the trick.

I also sing Rock-a-bye, Baby.  She also just loves instrumental music in general.

  • I sing a lot of Disney songs to her (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, Cinderella, Snow White, etc).  I also have quite a few religious songs that I sing.  Alison Krauss is another favorite.

  • My favorite is Billy Joel's "Lullabye" but I always tend to tear up when signing "And someday your child may cry but if you sing this lullabye then in your heart there will always be a part of me"

I also sing "Twinkle Twinkle Litte Star" and if she's really fussy, I sing her a made-up song I've been singing her ever since we were in the hospital (I just repeat "Momma's pre-tty Baaaaabbbbbyyyy" to a tune)

We have the lyrics to that on my dad's gravestone:

I promised I would never leave you
    And you should always know
    Wherever you may go
    No matter where you are
I never will be far away

  • I sing her the songs which were my favorites when I was little, which are "Edelweiss," "Puff the Magic Dragon" and "Inchworm."  I also sing her the Cape Breton Lullaby because my mom was Nova Scotian, though she never actually sang that song to me.

I've never heard Billy Joel's "Lullabye."  Will have to check it out.
