? for those who have had GD

I don't have my glucose test for another 4 weeks, but I am wondering if I am showing signs of GD. The past few mornings, I have had some coffee and rice krispies w/ banana for breakfast (approx. 6:30 a.m.). By about 9:30-10:00, I have been getting shaky. If I eat a snack, it goes away. Is that something that happens when you have GD?

Re: ? for those who have had GD

  • You're not eating any protein or fat at breakfast, both of which slow down the digestion process and help you hang on to the food a little longer. The rice krispies and banana both turn to sugar when they digest, so your blood sugar is spiking and then crashing a few hours later.

I eat every 3 hours (and recommend that!), but I really think you need to get protein and fat in at breakfast if you want to hold off that shaky feeling. Eggs are a great way to do that.

I can't say you don't have GD, but you're not doing your body any favors by staying away from those nutrients early in the morning!

Thanks! I will try adding an egg to my breakfast. DH already thinks I am a piggy for eating breakfast at all since "he does not need breakfast to function" but whatever, I'm hungry!!

  • If I don't eat frequent meals while pregnant, it's not uncommon for me to feel that way too. I didn't have GD with DS and I'm at very low risk for it, despite having twins (what I'm saying is, I'm pretty sure I don't have it--I think what you're feeling is normal).

Tell your hubby that skipping meals (or going too long between them) or letting your blood sugar go through big swings while pregnant isn't good for you OR the baby.  Much better to try and keep blood sugar up and give the baby more steady nutrition.

Oh, DH would be in trouble if he ever said anything about how much/when I eat! It is not healthy to skip breakfast - you've essentially fasted from whenever dinner was the night before (probably about 12 hours) and you need to get some fuel in your body! Especially when pregnant, it's important to keep your energy level up.

Just because your DH doesn't need it to function does not mean it's right or normal to skip it.

    1. Tell your DH his comment is stupid and uninformed. Everyone needs breakfast, not just a pg mom.  Tell him to talk to a nutritionist and then see which of the two of you is right.

    2.  Definitely add in protein. And don't feel bad about snacking. You need it. Try to generally have more protein throughout the day - yogurt, nuts, eggs, etc.  I had GD but didn't get shaky. However, in regular, non-pg life I can do that and usually snacking (and adding protein) will help with that.

  • 2nd breakfast was a necessity during both of my pregnancies. No matter what I had for breakfast, I was always hungry by mid-morning. And I passed my 1-hour both times.
  • I had no such symptoms.  Just the big fat fail of the 1 hour.

  • I had no symptoms at all, I failed my 1 hour and then my 3 hour and am now on meds.  Only thing I DID notice was after chugging my glucose drink I started sweating like a whore in church.  I'm guessing if you're passing that doesn't happen?  Not sure....
