i thought i remembered you have graves disease also and wanted to pick your brain about how your thyroid responded after the baby. i've been in remission for a couple years before we got pg (was on tapazole for 14 mo), and my thyroid behaved all through pregnancy.

now that i'm about 4 mo pp, i'm starting to experience some symptoms that are hyper (hair loss, slight heart palpitations, feeling wired, weight loss). it's not the whole slew of symptoms that i had when i was first diagnosed. how do you tell when it's thyroid versus postpartum stuff?

Re: ****taytee****

  • I actually have underlying Hashimotos which resulted in a goiter that created pressure giving me a hyperactive thyroid (one side anyway!) They removed troublesome side and it's a wait and see.

Right now I get tested every 3-6 months depending on how I feel. But eventually my body will kill the other half of my thyroid and I'll be on meds the rest of my life.

Weight loss and hair loss are perfectly normal at 4 months PP. Heart palpitations are not. The feeling wired is hard to say because it depends on how much you sleep, your overall activity level and if you drink coffee etc. But overall I'd say combined with the heart palpitations that it's a good reason to have your blood drawn again.

Was your Graves managed by your PCP or did you see an endocrinologist? If it was your PCP, I HIGHLY recommend you see a specialist like an endocrinologist as there is a whole lot of more sensitive tests those guys like to run than your PCP would. I see Stephanie S haw and I think she's awesome.

  • i see an endocrinologist at texas diabetes. he warned me that a lot of thyroids in remission will start to freak out again after pregnancy with all the hormones trying to get back to normal.

re: sleep... i'm back to getting up a couple times during the night to feed LO since he wasn't eating full meals from a bottle at daycare. i don't drink coffee, but i'll have tea every now and then, which has caffeine.

i guess i was waiting for the tremors, heat intolerance and the pounding heart palpitations (right now, i notice my heart beating in my ears when i'm trying to go to sleep, if that makes any sense) from the other times when my levels have been high. i'll be good and get my blood work done early just so i know what's going on.
