February 2012 Moms

My hospital has bedbugs!!!

It's supposed to be under control, but apparently it's an ongoing problem, as visitors keep bringing them in.  But they had some in one of the maternity rooms over New Years!  Yuck!  Imagine bringing bedbugs home with your new baby!?!?!?!

  • Ew!  But I imagine it happens more often than people know about with the current "problem" of bedbugs in the U.S.

  • OK. This may be the single greatest reason for me to have my homebirth. GROSS.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

Word.  I really don't think people understand how dirty hospitals can be.  My good friend caught staph after her c-section last year and had to be re-hospitalized a week after birth...and even after she was discharged she was still sick for 4 MONTHS.

    That's disgusting.

I used to take my grandmother to her doctor's appointments (before I got pregnant) and I couldn't believe how nasty those clinics were. It reminded me of why I hate hospitals. It was like riding the city bus.

I really, really hope you don't get bedbugs, OP. I've never had them, but I hear it's harder to get rid of than scabies. Nasty.

  • It is really gross, but I work in a hospital in a city with a huge bedbug problem, and it is really pretty common. The hospital has policies in place to treat the areas affected by bedbugs, but they can't control whether patients treat them in their own homes (which they usually don't or do ineffectively) and they continue to be brought back. If you're worried about it when you deliver, keep your clothing, baby blankets, etc. in a tied up garbage or plastic bag and wash everything in hot water and dry it when you get home. Keeping them in the bag with no air is supposedly supposed to kill them and heat is the best way to kill them when they are on clothing & linens.

PP, thanks for the tips!  I really thought about a home birth, but the idea terrifies MH.  I wonder how hard it will be to inspect all the soft surfaces in the room while in active labour... Stick out tongue
