Sippy Cups

For those of you who made a transition already, how long did it take?

I really havent given it much of a try. I've offered it maybe ten times over the past 2 months and she will just chew on the top of it.

She also will not drink anything but milk/formula. I've tried several times water and watered down juice, but she just spits it out. I'm not concerned about that, I just think its a little odd. I don't think she really NEEDS either of them, but I'm surprised she wont take it. She has no problem eating anything and everything I have put in front of her.  We go to the pedi on Monday.

Re: Sippy Cups

  • Joshua will only drink water out of his sippy cup.  He refused to take formula and now WCM out of it.  We have not offered juice yet - even watered down.  He does great drinking water out of the cup except he likes to play and will get some in his mouth and let it dribble back out and then laughs about it.  So I know he is capable of using the cup but wants milk out of a bottle.

  • After 6 months of trying (I'd offer it every couple weeks), she FINALLY took one a couple days ago. She's been nagging DH lately to try and drink from his water bottles, so I thought I'd give it another go and it worked!

She still does not understand the ones where you have to tilt your head back, so we use a straw one. I took the leak proof valve out. It was making it too hard to suck out of. Now that she gets it, she'll drink anything I give her and even cries when I try to take it away.

Keep offering it to her and just see how it goes. It's not a big deal at this age. She'll take it when she's ready.

  • Ok, thanks guys.  For some reason I had it in my head to phase out the bottle at 12 months. Maybe I am crazy though ;-)

  • Did you read that one post on 9-12 about a month ago? (I'll try to find it if you don't know what I'm talking about)

The main jist of it was that dentists prefer you to switch by 1 year, but a few extra months isn't going to hurt anything.

I think most people switch around that time because they do the sippy & WCM all at once just to get it over with. I just ordered 4 more sippy cups. Once they come I plan on trying to get away from bottles completely. It's so much easier with her being able to drink sitting up instead of always having to find a place to recline/lay her down.

  • When we first started sippy's Jay didn't like the water/juice in them either. But he loves it now. I am not sure how long it took, we just offered it randomly and eventually he was usuing it on his own. Sorry that doesn't really help. We are usuin sippy's, straw cups(leak proof and spill proof), and the toddler cup that looks kina like a coffee mug. I would keep trying the water she may go for it eventually.

    This is jays favorite cup,

I am sure it doesn't matter, but our pedi told us to make sure at 9months that he was getting at least 6oz of water a day. I am sure it is fine if they don't. I know we didn't start getting close to that amount until recently. But I just thought I'd share.

  • we are going to try to phase out all but the bedtime bottle in the next couple weeks.  She will take water from a sippy, and we had already swapped out one bottle for a sippy at daycare, moved that to two sippies today, and are going to see how that goes.
  • Ok thanks Jcole.  Im going to talk to the pedi on monday about water too.

I do have that same sippy you linked, maybe I will keep on trying with that one.

  • I kept trying different cups (he prefers the silicone top ones). I give water out of the straw one cause he plays with the straw and it splashes...I'd hate to have milk sprayed all over everywhere. And milk is usually in the other kind. Nuby is the one I always use: https://nuby.com/en/nuby/cups-spouts/9845/

     or

    (sorry not clicky).

Any other silicone ones are just as good to him - but I find most others leak.

  • I bought all sorts of different sippy's for Aiden and in the end the super cheap "Take & Toss" ones were the best. At least to get him used to it because he didn't have to suck on it. Once he figured out that the good stuff just comes out when you tip it up he was good to go with any cup. I still only use the take and toss though because I've found it's hard to clean all the other parts of the leak proof & straw sippys. Over time they can grow mold in the tiny crevices, and I swear it doesn't matter how good you clean, sterilize and let them dry!

Also I dishwasher and reuse them for a long time. I don't just toss em ;)
