March 2012 Moms

For those who've had recent U/S - how big was baby?

My baby was 4lbs 9oz today.  I was shocked when I heard that number.  I haven't had an u/s since my anatomy scan, and all of the books and "This week your baby is..." articles had me expecting a number just over 3 pounds.  I know development is different for every baby and blah blah blah, but the fact that she is already 4 and a half pounds at 31 weeks has me nervous about pushing her out when she's to term!  The techs and my doctor told me she is in the 76th percentile, so it's not like she's monstrously huge or anything, just on the big side.  I was just diagnosed with GD, so I was worried, but apparently they are not, which is good enough for me.

If you've had an u/s recently, how big was your baby?

And, if there are any second time moms who had a late u/s, can you remember how big your baby was at the start of 3rd tri and whether or not your baby was big, average, or small at delivery?  Apparently I was a 8.5 lb baby myself.  Because I am short and petite, I always imagined I was on the small side (don't know why), but obviously birth weight and adult height are not related.

Re: For those who've had recent U/S - how big was baby?

  • At my 32 week U/S, both boys were 4lbs 10oz.

  • I had one 2 weeks ago and she was 3 pounds.  My doctor told me that later ultrasounds are not at all accurate.   She said that an u/s will say the baby is 11 pounds so the mother will get a c-section and the baby actually was only 8 pounds meaning she could have had a vaginal delivery.

That's good to hear.  I kind of wondered how they even came up with the weight just from measuring length anyway.  Sounds like it's a bit of a guessing game.

  • I had an u/s 2 weeks ago today actually. I was in L&D at 4am and they did not let me see the screen or the pictures, but the info was just added to my online chart today.

I would have been 28w2d, and she was a bit over 3lb, which is where I should be NOW based on all "how big is baby".

I don't really believe any of it. It is a guess even with an u/s. Im just happy she was healthy and fluid levels and all that jazz were as they should be :) The one thing the Dr did say that night was "28 weeks? her 'breathing' looks advanced, I would say you are a few days/week ahead of that". Again, that information didn't change my EDD...

  • I feel you, I keep reading the 3.something online and in my Mayo clinic book, but after being 2.9 which was above the 2lb avg everywhere else at 26.5 I was expecting bigger than the avg.

I had a scan today and babe weighed in at 4lbs 1oz.  Doing pretty good for him/herself.

I'm thinking this one is on track to being a little bigger than DD#1 who was 7lb 8oz. I'm kinda looking for LO to be close to 8lbs if not over by birth.

I feel pretty confident in my Peri's measurements.  He made me a believer with my last preg b/c on that Tuesday not only did he tell me I wouldn't make it back to him for the next Tuesday he measured DD#2 at 5lb 13oz and she came out that Saturday at 6lbs even.  3oz differential in 3 days with IUGR he was pretty darn close.

  • At my 30 week U/S the girls were measuring 3 lbs 5 oz and 3 lb 8 oz! I was happy with that but especially so because previously they had been measuring small!

  • I just had an ultrasound on Monday and they said the baby was 4lbs 2oz and was measuring at 32 wks 2 days. It made me really nervous also. My first baby was 8lbs 5oz and I had a c-section with her. Not because of size though. I am still hoping for a VBAC this time.

  • My last u/s was a couple weeks ago.  I was 28w3d and LO weighed 3lbs 3oz.

  • I just had an ultrasound yesterday at 29 weeks 5 days, and they told me the baby was measuring greater than the 90th percentile. I asked if they could tell me the weight and they said 4lbs 4 oz!!!!! I am definitely freaking out!!! I have heard about the weight estimations through ultrasound being off though.... here's hoping!!!

  • I had mine at 29 weeks exactly and she was 2lb 15oz, which they said was the 43rd percentile. I'm expecting her to be on the small side, but so far she's pretty close to right on track.

  • At 31 weeks baby was 3.12. I was surprised to hear he was in the 51% because I have GD and I went in expecting to hear some crazy weight. But I'm not putting everything into what they said, I've always heard the weight is off either way by 1lb or 2lbs.

  • I had an ultrasound yesterday. Our little girl is measuring around 3.8 lbs. at our 28 week u/s she was in the 53rd percentile. Everything else is on track within a few days.

I think that if there was a problem with the size of your little one (sizing by u/s is not 100% accurate), I'm sure your doctor would talk to you about it. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy. :) All of our little ones will be here before we know it! :)

  • I had a growth u/s last week at 29 weeks and he was measuring at 3lbs4oz, which I was told in 55th percentile. Four weeks before that, he was in the 90th percentile. When I had a growth u/s with DD at around 36 weeks, I was told she was measuring at 9lbs and she was born weighing 8lbz 1oz (and I know that sounds pretty big too, but it was a really easy labor)
  • I too have GD I went on the 3rd....which made me 31w 3d...Baby was measuring 4lb 3oz, and they said he was measuring in range....My dr will do a growth U/s every to weeks to check his growth....my dr also told me there is a  +/- and it isn't an exact science for ultrasounds....hope that helps....

When did you find out you have GD? Have you been able to mantain your blood sugar?

  • The tech told me during my 3rd trimester ultrasound at 28w6d that the baby weighed approx. 3 lbs and was in the 57th percentile.

When did you find out you have GD? Have you been able to mantain your blood sugar?

I found out last Thursday.  So far my levels have been good just with the GD diet.  They were a teensy bit high on the very first morning I started testing and a teensy bit high one other day after a meal, but my doctor told me she would only be concerned if 1/3 of my numbers were high.

  • Today baby weighed 5lbs 4oz. She is in the 73rd percentile - I am 32w4 days.

These measurements are pretty close to the same as my sons - he was born at 38 weeks and weighed 7lbs 6oz.

  • I had an U/S at 30w 1d and they estimated her to weight 3 lbs 1 oz.  I go back next week for a biophysical profile (?) and then again the following week for my regularly scheduled growth scan.

Yea they look for trends...my doctor told me since my sugars are maintained by my diet that she is treating me like every other pregnancy....she will only be concerned if she sees something that will make her concerned.....

  • Earlier this week, we had an ultrasound and the baby was measuring at 4lbs even at 31 wks 1 day. They said she was a little larger than normal but they aren't worried.

U/S in the last trimester, especially towards the very end of the pregnancy are +/- 1 pound.

  • I guess it's not really fair for me to compare (as usual). At my last u/s 2 weeks ago, DD measured 2lb 4oz (12th percentile).

  • I had an u/s on the 2nd and they said DS2 was 4.3lbs- which'll put him around 8. Last pregnancy DS1 weighed in at 4.2lbs at the same gestational-age u/s, and he came out at 8lbs 1oz. :) I would say there are factors that can probably change what the tech says about weight, and it's not always accurate.

  • 2 days ago, my LO measured 4lb5oz.  My DS was 8lb8oz at birth and my OB today said I'd be on track for another 8 pounder. I'm a hopeful VBAC so perhaps this little gal will be closer to the 7lb range...

  • At 30 wks Clayton was 3 lbs 11 oz (53%tile) and Jackson was 4 lbs 6 oz (80%tile).  Clayton's is probably off since he was in a weird position and the tech had problems getting the measurements.

I only had a late term u/s with DD1 and they told me she was going to be over 9lbs - she was 8 lbs 12 oz, born at 40 wks 5 d.  I had an unplanned c/s with her, but that had nothing to do with her size.  I'm only 5'0", so I'm petite as well.  Its not really your size that matters, but the shape of your pelvis and the opening of it (where the baby needs to drop down through.
