C-sections

Cut through muscle or just spread apart?

My friends mom is a gyno in Russia and she says they do not cut the muscle during c-sections there..and because of it, nobody has saggy flappy skin above scar.

Do they do this here?

Re: Cut through muscle or just spread apart?

  • I think they do. And I didn't know there was a choice or preference. All I know is that apparently my muscle was cut because sadly I have saggy, flappy skin above my scar!

    Please do and report back!

  • I used to scrub for c-sections.  It is the surgeon's choice but I don't remember any of them cutting the muscle.  I think it's kind of a generalized statement that none of them have flab above their incisions.  I don't think how they separate the muscle has little to do with that in the long run, just my opinion.
  • dumb question..so your dr. doesn't do c section but another surgeon? So I shouldn't ask my dr. about this? when does he come into play?

    OBs are trained surgeons.

  • My brother and best friend are OBs -- there is no cutting muscles, they just spread them.

  • My ob/gyn cut through the muscle with mine. I know that I didn't have a choice as to how it is cut.

That's really crazy and the complete opposite of everything I've heard from all the OBs I've talked to.  Did your doctor actually say that s/he cut the abdominal muscles?  It seems completely unnecessary because they are so easily separated so I can't imagine doing that, even in an emergency.

I did have an unplanned c/s and yes, my ob did say that he cut through the ab muscles but I have no idea if that was the reason why they were cut. I figured that was the norm. I guess that shows how little I know about c/s. :)

Your OB is a surgeon and will perform the c/s. To answer your original question, my OB separated my abs. I only know because I asked.

  • I think there is a misinterpretation of what muscle doctors are referring to when they talk about muscles being cut.  I had to see several OBs and some of them told me they do not cut muscle.  The one I ended up with told me that some muscle is not cut, but other muscle is and described all the muscles.  He said that OBs that say they do not cut muscle are mincing words, they are referring to the muscles everyone thinks of, but not other muscle that must be cut.  He is known for his amazing c-sections and I was not disappointed.  3 weeks out I have no pooch even though I'm overweight, and my incision line is almost completely invisible, my husband can't believe it.
  • I don't know what they cut, but he did tell me that there was so much pain and recovery because "there's a lot of stuff sewn up in there." Yeah, I have a saggy flap. Gross.

  • Me either.  But I have nerve pain in my leg still and I asked the dr about that post op.  He said that sometimes happens in hysterectomies where they use a "spreader" (his word) but that wouldn't be the case for me.  So from that I would assume he didn't use that tool and was cut but I don't know for sure.  I know it hurt like hell and I do have a flap. I had an emergency c/s.
