VBAC

A VBAC success calculator

https://www.bsc.gwu.edu/mfmu/vagbirth.html

I used it and it gave me a rate of 76%, 85% if I can loose 5 more pounds ;-)

Thought I'd share!

Re: A VBAC success calculator

  • Like your name says.....hope counts.....as does determination and the support of a good provider.

My success rate is only estimated at 53% because I'm older, slightly overweight and was diagnosed as failure to descend.  But, my provider has a success rate of over 95% and she didn't bat an eye with my history.  So, that calculator is clearly missing something.

  • Yep. One calculator doesn't tell the whole story, determination can make a huge difference.

Just thought it was interesting :-)

  • I put in the stats I had when I got pregnant with #2 (who ended up being a successful VBAC) and it gave me a 73% chance.  Interesting considering the OB who did my c/s basically told me I had no chance at a VBAC.

If I put in my info now that I have had a VBAC, my odds go up to 95%.

  • And I'm just gonna ignore that calculator!! haha
  • My success rate for when I was pregnant with #2 was 81.9%  My rate now (including VBAC) would be 96.5%

That said, I suggest any hopefuls ignore that calculator:-)

  • It gave me a 72.4% chance to have a VBAC which I did so yay

now I have a 96.4% chance for future babies, I love those odds!

  • My chances were 46% based on my stats for my 2nd pg. I did have a successful vbac, so either I'm super lucky or the calculator is crap.

  • Lol, yeah, glad I didn't know that I only had a 43% chance when I attempted - and succeeded - my VBAC ;)

  • 48.7% if I put in my pre-VBAC #s

    86.4% for future VBACs

  • Don't put too much thought into the calculator, it's just for fun. Your MW has great stats and you want this, that'll make a huge difference.

As for the weight thing, I think it's the BMI at that weight that's important (it's a  good healthy weight for my height) my BMI drops to 21% I think that's what made the difference. But it's those stubborn 5 lbs I've been trying to loose since college so who knows.

Obviously it's just one calculator but 62.1% ugh. My midwife has an 85% success rate though and didn't blink an eye at my chances. She said FTP is misleading since I may have progressed just fine if I wasn't pushed into a post-date induction or if I was given more than 10 hours to progress.

Does anyone have anything research based on how much weight has to do with VBAC success?  Obviously, I'm already PG and won't be dieting, but it is interesting that that calculator goes up so much with a 5 pound loss.

I don't know, but I do know that I am quite overweight and had a quick and effective delivery for my VBAC. So whatever negative effect weight has on VBACs there are exceptions.

  • Then I wouldn't worry too much about it my guess is that it's a lazy way for them to factor in health (lower BMI=more active/healthy is the assumption)

If you're exercising and eating a balanced diet it's probably not as accurate. :-) in that area for you.

Ditto this!  My odds before #2 were 78%, but now after my VBAC my odds also went up to like 96% Big Smile
