Beauty and the Beast 3D, what age is appropriate?

I have a 3 year old who has been asking to go see Beauty and The Beast.  She sees the tv commercials and wants to go.  I had been hoping maybe they would also offer a 2D version so that we could avoid the 3D effects that might upset her but I don't see one through our local theater.  If you are taking your kids how old are they?  What age do you think is appropriate for 3d movies?  TIA

Re: Beauty and the Beast 3D, what age is appropriate?

  • Disney Channel aired Beauty and the Beast a few months ago and I DVR-ed it for my DD. She found some of the scenes really scary and she's not scared easily. The part where the father gets lost in the woods and then later the Beast gets angry and screams in Belles face while bashing furniture. She runs away into the scary woods again and then gets hunted by a pack of wolves. Seriously.. I found a video of that scene on youtube as a refresher.

I think 3D movies would be fun at this age, but not with this movie.

  • Someone just asked this on Toddlers 24+ so I'll just post what I said there here, with some updates

    We are going to go.

Our theater has this movie in regular format (2D) and not just 3D.  I was a little bummed when I thought that Beauty and the Beast was just coming out in 3D because I wasn't going to take DD to a 3D movie. But thankfully they are showing it normally and we are headed there this weekend.

Oh also there is a Tangled short with this film as well, so I know that will be a great bonus.

  • We saw the Lion King in 3D whenever it was out, maybe 6 months ago? So DS was right around 3. He didn't seem bothered by the 3D effects at all.

That being said, our theater does have a 2D version once a day, and we are going to that one because I just prefer it to having to wear the glasses and stuff.

  • We'll take DD but she is not easily scared.  And probably opt for 2D versus 3D.  We tried a 3D movie with her and it was a dismal failure.  She might be better about it now but I'd rather not risk it.  Plus 3D movies often give me a headache so we're cool with just the 2D.

  • You can probably skip the glasses. With these older movies originally animated with cels, there is only so much turning them into 3D will even do. DS wore his glasses for about 20 minutes and I didn't wear mine at all because they didn't fit over my glasses and I barely noticed any quality loss in the picture.
  • My LOs (3.5 and 2) love the movie when we watch it at home, but I'm not taking them to see it in theaters.

DD has never been to a theater before and the one time we took DS he didn't last long at all, so 'first movie' experience plus having to keep the 3-D glasses on = likely not worth the $$.

  • My DD LOVES Beauty and the Beast.  She's not easily scared though and loves to reenact the scene where the Beast fights off the wolves.  Tongue Tied  She has also seen a handful of 3D movies over the past year and loves them.  She keeps her glasses on the whole time, however it seems like most of my friends' kids don't enjoy the 3D as much.

  • Oh good.  I found some info I wanted on this.   DD is DYING to see Tangled Ever After but we will go see B&B also (cause you have too : ) .  DD is 6 but starting watching B&B when she was 3-4 years old.  There are some scary parts but my kids are not sensitive to that.   I may bring DS1 (4) or ask a girlfriend to have a mommy daughter date.

  • My DS#1 loved Beauty and the Beast. I did take him to see Lion King in 3D and he didn't want to wear the glasses and didn't have much fun even though he does like the Lion King movie as well.

  • I didn't know about the Tangled short! I'd take DD1 just for that.

We have B&B and she's seen it at home. I think we'll stick to 2D, though.

  • My daughter's 4.  When she was 3 (almost 4) we took her to see The Lion King in 3D; she handled the 3D effects just fine. She kept saying "Mommy!  They're in here with us!"  Other than some scenes in the movie frightening her a little, she enjoyed it.  I'm pretty sure she'll react the same tomorrow when we see Beauty.

If your daughter's been asking, it'll be a good idea if you take her.  Let her see what it's like but don't put any heavy expectations on it.  If she enjoys it, great; if not, you can always leave and try again another time.  GL!
