When is it more than just "mommy brain?"

Y'all, I'm getting a little worried about myself lately. I used to be the most organized and put together person in the world. But I have been forgetting stuff so easily lately. On the one hand, I feel like its understandable considering our circumstances with the dual daycare and my part time telework schedule. But then again, Sophie is over a year now... shouldn't I be regaining some sanity? It improved drastically after I weaned Gavin and the hormones stabilized, but Sophie has been weaned for almost 4 mos and I actually think I've gotten worse since then. Just today, I realized that I forgot to tell our church preschool director that the kids were switching from Mondays to Thursdays.  Ummm hello!  I swear I thought I sent her an email over a month ago but I checked and nothing.  And I keep forgetting stuff at work and at home.  I told my grandmother we would stop by last week and then I never did and I felt so bad b/c she stayed home waiting for me all day and was worried that I never came :-(  I know people will understand, but I HATE this and I worry I'm going to forget to do something serious soon.  I feel like its all my own fault- I have let my life get so crazy its not healthy.  Moving them to a new daycare next month is a step in the right direction towards simplifying our life but we still have a long ways to go.  But anyway, my point is... I'm just wondering if I should be writing this off as stress/mommy brain or do I need take it more seriously and mention it to my Dr?

Re: When is it more than just "mommy brain?"

  • I still have issues I blame on mommy brain.  I was like this before kids and it has only gotten worse.  I blame it on the kids for sure.

I had an MRI of my brain this week and everything is normal (ha) so I guess it really is just the kids :)

  • Do you have any other symptoms (anxiety, fatigue)?

It obviously doesn't hurt to mention to your dr. In my own experience, when my anxiety ramps up (which I do take meds for), my concentration and ability to focus /remember things gets jacked up as well.

YES.  I am getting concerned about my anxiety levels for sure.  My neck and shoulders are permanently tense.  I go for a massage and it's tight again within a few hours.  I have to physically will those muscles to relax.  I have headaches almost daily.  It's horrible.  I've never taken anything for anxiety before but I'm planning on talking to my Dr about it when I go in next.

Ah, okay, that makes sense. Definitely talk to your doctor about it.  FWIW, I've been on various meds for anxiety since I was in my teens if you want to chat about it (I most recently had to switch to Lexapro after Mia was born since it I breastfed).  I take that, plus a combination of non-med solutions and it seems to work for me.

    Good luck!
