Well rats, yesterday I carried the firewood in the house myself, started the fire and kept in going all night. Our unit is sealed though, no fumes in the house. And when tending to the fire it's not like my head was in there.
I guess the only area of concern I would suggest is length of time sitting in front of it - I know things like hot baths, hot tubs and electric blankets are out due to them raising body temp. I'd imagine the same risk is possible for prolonged sitting in front of the fireplace. But I don't suspect just having it on is going to be a risk.
Re: fireplace?

Don't burn garbage or plastic....
I cannot handle this.
You'll encounter worse fumes by driving behind another car.
